this has been done before but not many pics to go with it...so I figured since I just did it I might as well share:

1) take off handle

<a href="http://s44.photobucket.com/user/sinks88/media/handle_zps0yejarpm.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f15/sinks88/handle_zps0yejarpm.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo handle_zps0yejarpm.jpg"/></a>

2) pop off panel (and un-attach light clips)
*pulls out/down and tabs on top edge (see pics for all the spots)
<a href="http://s44.photobucket.com/user/sinks88/media/cover_zps6q0w0ufh.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f15/sinks88/cover_zps6q0w0ufh.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo cover_zps6q0w0ufh.jpg"/></a>

3) Move plastic protection cover
<a href="http://s44.photobucket.com/user/sinks88/media/plastic_zpsa8mdbfvv.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f15/sinks88/plastic_zpsa8mdbfvv.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo plastic_zpsa8mdbfvv.jpg"/></a>

4) remove latch cover
<a href="http://s44.photobucket.com/user/sinks88/media/latch_zps7zreci94.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f15/sinks88/latch_zps7zreci94.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo latch_zps7zreci94.jpg"/></a>

5) secure whatever you want to be your mechanical pull
"hickie" and route to your choice of opening (I used shoe laces)
<a href="http://s44.photobucket.com/user/sinks88/media/latch%20cover%20and%20laces_zpsw9go0aml.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f15/sinks88/latch%20cover%20and%20laces_zpsw9go0aml.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo latch cover and laces_zpsw9go0aml.jpg"/></a>
<a href="http://s44.photobucket.com/user/sinks88/media/handle_zpsdai0tdb3.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f15/sinks88/handle_zpsdai0tdb3.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo handle_zpsdai0tdb3.jpg"/></a>

I have the pull string behind the access panel so there are no accidental openings. I did make a pull for the cover tho :)

So what happens when the actuator fails and you can't unlock it? :P

Edit-

Wait, I think the 4Runners have an override there so even if it's locked it'll pop it. I'm thinking of that nightmare of a Sequoia I had to do....

I have a drawer system in the trunk. I've been concerned about what i'd do if the actuator failed. I'm doing this mod today as a just-in-case.
