Rear Locker Worth??

I just found a guy with a wrecked 1998 with 140k miles and is selling the RR DIFF LOCK rear end. He said he wanted $1200 for it and I laughed and told him that was too much so then he said make me an offer. What is the most you guys would pay for a locking rear end of that model and mileage? Thanks in advance for any replies

I wouldn't pay $1200 but I have to say that it is not unreasonable in the current market. Really it comes down to what your level of fab skill is. if you can do some basic fab stuff then find a e-Locked third for between 300-500 then modify your housing and do the wiring and bada bing there you go. If you don't have those skills then it seems like the guy is willing to to move some. I would just find out his lowest number, show up with the most cash your willing to pay and make a deal. Cash is hard to walk away from. Good luck

I agree with this :bigok:. Unless you have your heart set on a Toy elocker then for the cost you can have an arb and not have to modify your axle housing. And ARB's are faster to engage and release from what I understand.

So you think for the complete 4.10 locked axle assy, all wiring and ecu, and button $500-$600 would be a good price? I'm not mechanically inclined to much other than bolt off and bolt on unfortunately...

Looks like they range from $500-$800 from a salvage yard near you. Might be cheaper nationwide. Generally I would expect a private seller to be equal or less than the cheapest salvage yard price since most yards offer some sort of warranty.

Also will the 1998 rear end bolt up the same as my 99 does? Will anything have to be modified? Thanks guys I've learned so much from you since I bought my 3rd gen in September...

those are great prices. In AZ I cant find a 3rd for much less than 400 so I say go for the 500 if he will.

yes good price. even if you have to get help with the wiring I would call that a really good deal. especially if you don't have to regear.

Its hard to weld a toyota v6... The carrier isnt like the toyota 4cyl which has the large side openings and is a piece of cake to weld. The v6 need to be be pulled apart and carefully welded, then its hit or miss if you can get the cross pin back in. Better to get a spool They are only about $150

and to the OP, do not go with a lincoln locker, i was being 125% sarcastic, -a lincoln locker is when you weld up the spyder gears, its a permanent doing, the only way to undo that is replace the 3rd member. and if not done correctly(welding the spyders) they will break and cause lots of grief and leave you stranded. my recommendation is either get the factory locking rear diff with axle or buy an ARB and have someone install it for you.

thanks man after reading what you said about the "lincoln locker" I googled it and quickly decided it was a no go HAHA I think I offended this guy with the rear end for sale... I msg'd him back and told him top dollar I'd offer is $600 for everything and he didn't even reply back HAHA Hell I don't need it because I don't do any serious wheeling but it'd be cool to add to my rig at some point. keep your eyes open, you can find deals, i found my ARB used for cheap, i have less than $600 into the whole thing, i installed it myself so that saved a lot. but still the ARB locker it self is like $900 then get a compressor ect. you probably wont ever see that deal again, but there are deals out there you just have to be patient and have the cash in hand and be able to jump at a moments notice sometimes. i have seen complete factory rear axles(for tacomas) with the locking diff sell for like $400 in less than an hour in CL here in the northwest. so deals do come along

X2 take the 600 you were going to pay for this axle and stick it in an envelope and then in the back of a drawer and then keep your eyes peeled for a deal then pounce.

everything should bolt up the same, and if that guy wants 1200 for a rear diff you might as well move along cuz hes probably gonna laugh back at ya when you give him a real offer... id rather by a new locker, but i got both of mine used and they work
