Rear Main Seal Question

I have 98 4runner with a little over 400,000 Miles. Never have had any issues

except little maintance here and there. I just replaced the Rear Main myself.

I put it in the right way, It didnt go in sideways or damage the seal durring

installation. I have R&R rear mains in other vehicals before. The seal in it

before was factory and never has been replaced till now. It slowed down the

Leak, But its still sweatin Oil a little bit. I remeber having the same issue

along time ago on another vehical. The seal that was in before wore a

groove in the crank. They made a sleeve to go with the seal to fix that

issue. I was wondering if they make that for the 4runner or if a 4runner even

has this issue at all? I would appreciate some help please.

If this has been discuss before and I missed it in my search, I appologize so no need to tell me there is a "search Button" I know where it is.

I just did my rear main seal this past weekend too. In all my searches I didn't ever see a groove or sleeve mentioned. No one at the various Toyota parts centers mentioned and I don't remember seeing a mention of one in the FSM. Sorry that you have a slight leak. I'm worried now and will go check mine.

The one I just bought has a small RMS leak. I have been researching and haven't seen any mention of sleeves. The PO already bought the seal, and that was it. Gannonrt, how difficult was it? I have a friend with a lift, and was planning on using that to change it out.

If a sleeve is not made for the rear main seal, the only option is to not drive the seal in all the way so as for the seal lip not to ride in the groove that the old seal made.:bluejump:

First off, I have a 5-speed so I'm not sure what the difference is between 5 speed and automatic so take what I say with a grain of salt. My handy neighbor and I spent about 10 hours last weekend and another 10 hours this weekend replacing my clutch. I figured I would do the seal while I had it open. Neither he nor I had done a 4runner clutch before so 13 hours was taking apart, 2 hours was drilling out rusted exhaust bolts and 5 replacing clutch and putting it all back together again. However I could also see how we could do it in under 6 hours if we had to do it again since the learning part is what takes time. So if you've done lots of mechanic work and you can find a good write up then you could finish in a weekend but if you're a noob like me then it might take longer. Make sure you have a half inch socket set with 30+ inches of extensions and some swivel joints. Also, blue Loctite and a torque wrench would be good. Finally, use the Baggie system to label every bolt you take off and take pictures along the way for reference.

I have a shop with a lift in my back yard also. If it wasnt for a Lift I wouldnt touch any of my vehicals. I guess I'm to spoiled now, Because I will never do anything on the ground. With that said it is fairly easy If you have R&R a transmission before. All vehicals are different but if you have an idea how to do it and have accomplished it before then its not a issue. If you havent pulled one out before then grab a friend that has and learn. Im not going to tell you to take it to a shop and spend a redicoulous amount of money. Just try your best and double check all your work!!
Good luck!!!

Appreciate it. The friend works for a transmission shop in town, and does jobs on the side, hence the lift. I'm sure he could drop it in an hr as much as he does them. $600 was quoted at a shop to do it, so if I can pay him in beer to help me I'd say I got a good deal.

Did you use an OEM seal? I've read a few threads where after market RMS leak from day 1. I'm getting ready to replace my clutch and picked a Toyota RMS to do at the same time.

$600 seems like a fair price to pay for this job at a shop. Even with a lift I can't see a guy being able to drop it in an hour no matter how skilled he is. There's just a lot of stuff to do and some real tight spots. If there's any rust it's a bear to work bolts out. I would guess a really good guy with a lift, proper tools, and a spare hand when needed could do it in 5-6 hours. So with mechanic rates being $75-$125 in my area and the seal being $40-$50 from Toyota I would feel ok paying that price if I had too.

I did use the Toyota RMS. I had a price of $20 with $16 shipping from Village Toyota online and the two local dealerships wanted $40 and $50. I went with the $40 since I couldn't wait for Village. I would not use an aftermarket on something like this. There's too much work to replace it and then have it leak again.
