Rear passenger wheel squeak

I have read all the search results for this one, but didn't really find what I was looking for. My rear wheel squeaks intermittently when the brakes are not being applied, consistent with wheel speed, from parking lot speeds up to merging on the interstate. When I hit the brakes, the squeaking stops. Shop said rear pads are fine, almost new. a brake shim was loose, which the guy stuck back in. the rotors are smooth, in great shape. so what the heck is squeaking? Its slowly driving me insane. If i am not playing music, i hear it in the cab and it makes me want to leave the pavement in search of a large tree. My next day off is in about a week, so I'd really appreciate a little insight into what makes a rear wheel tick when I tear this sucker apart. What should I possibly be looking for?

I had a similar situation with the passenger front wheel last fall. Did the same thing you did and still the squeaking was there. Finally, I changed out the brake caliper and the squeaking went away. 4Runners are notorious for stuck pistons in the calipers, so you might want to look into that. Hope this helps...

Mostly likely the squeaking is from your e-brake hardware failing. It happens and is cheap to replace.
