Rear shocks - quick help

Hey guys,

I've done a bit of reading about it but just wanted to get some knowledgeable input.

The Vehicle:
2007 4Runner v6 Limited with 115k miles

I will be replacing the front shock/coil assembly on my wife's 4Runner with the stock setup from my 2013 Tacoma (I'm lifting mine, and hers has a pretty rough ride and very bouncy). From my research the front assembly should carry over from mine to hers, but the rear shocks obviously will not. The 4Runner doesn't have the ride height control, so I don't think I need anything special in the rear, but I just wanted to confirm that. Can I just grab some Bilstein 5100's (P/N 33-187174) and throw those on the rear or do I need to grab a special kind of shock?

Really? Nobody knows if that shock will fit the 4Runner Limited?

Does the 4runner have xreas? I know many limited do. In that case, you would have to replace all 4 shocks with the billys. Many many many forum members have had great success with 5100s and I wish that I did it instead of replacing xreas.

yep you can just throw in the 5100's in the rear and be fine.

Those would work if thats the correct part number. Beauty about the 5100s though, imho, is that they are simply awesome when you have the full set put on. I know they are a little pricey , but they really are worth it. And like Zopperman mentioned, make sure you dont have XREAS.....

the taco's usually come with bilsteins so it shouldn't be to far off of a matching pare once you swap out the front struts. The shock travel will obviously be different however, the valving should be similar enough to not notice and provide a firmer ride than the factory.

Thanks for the responses guys! I took a quick peak under the wife's 4Runner yesterday and didn't see any lines coming from the rear shocks, but I'll look a bit more closely today. If she has XREAS, can I just remove that system or is it going to cause troubles?

I would do 5100's all the way around, but my front Bilsteins should be close enough to the 5100's and they'll come assembled so I won't have to swap the springs out. Plus, with just shy of 5k miles, they should be in great shape.

Sounds like a good plan. You can rip it out. Look on the frame rails just behind the front doors for the central absorbers. That's a dead give away. I'd post a photo but I'm on the phone

if you are not lifting the 4runner. you don't need the 5100s. you can just get the HDs and save a couple bucks.

On second thought, I think I may have found it. Does 24-186049 look right?

For the extra 40 bucks (total) you may as well get the 5100's so you can lift/level if you want... I personally think the truck sitting level is how it should have come from the factory and it looks much better. But to each his own!
