Rear Spare tire carrier and OME 891 lift

OK...After my trip to death valley, I figured to add a spare tire carrier and gas can holders. Why? My 4runner deserve something special for making the trip a success.

It was such a harsh terrain and my stock 4runner did it great! Absolutely no problems.....

Any body know about these rear hitch mounted spare tire carriers?

Also any comments about OME 891 springs? would this gives a stiff suspension?

I believe CBI offers a hitch mounted tire carrier

I can't speak to the Tiregate or CBI models specifically. I can tell you, having built my own, that there's a reason you don't see more people running hitch mount carriers - they're a complete PITA. I'm in and out of my cargo area fairly frequently, and the drop-down style of hitch mount is terribly annoying. It's pretty much a two-handed operation to drop it and lift it back up again. I say save your pennies and buy a proper swingout bumper, or better yet invest $200ish in a good used welding setup and another $200ish in materials and make your own.

I haven't run anything else but I think the OME 891 is stiff as fawk, and that's with like 500lbs of gear always in the back and 5100s. The 5100s made a hell of a difference but it's still nowhere near as smooth as the front.

I really didn't think that the 891s are that bad. I have had mine in for a month or so and I didn't really notice them being harsh....

That is definitely an interesting twist on the hitch mounted tire carrier. But for that kind of money, look at a bumper with a carrier for sure.

Personally dude I don't think you or most people need a rear tire carrier.

Heck around town I don't even carry a spare.

Buy gas cans you can tie to the roof like the square one I had.

Get a savage off-road rear bumper ($450) and sliders ($300) - and you can still put a 31-33 below the rear bumper like i did.

Having the tire on the rear changes the geometry of the truck in a way different than originally designed.

It adds unnecessary weight as well.

Savage rear + sliders (soooo important) + cash for maintenance is Much much better use of money than the $1200 ish people here spend on rear swing out bumpers.

It really depends on how they want to setup their rig. Personally I wouldn't want the spare gas cans on the roof, it is a pain.

Any aftermarket bumper is going to change how our trucks handle because you are changing weight distribution no matter what. As far as specifically the tire carrier or tire placement effecting how the truck handles I don't agree (other than if it were on the roof and gas cans would almost be worse up there). Any aftermarket bumper available, including the savage, will change how the trucks handle because they are all heavier so it is really all about what you want.

Edit: Plus he was looking for a hitch mounted carrier so what we are talking about doesnt matter anyways...
