Rear Suspension Recall

I knew that there's known issues for rear end sag on the 3rd gens, but I didn't know that they were ever actually recalled. How do you know if the work has been done?
I read about the recall here. I checked the vin through NHTSA website and it showed a recall. I called the Toyota dealer, gave them the vin, and asked if it was still open. They told me that it had not been done on that vin.

Yeah it's new springs, a rubber bit that goes inside the spring, and new bump stops, depending on model. nothing to do with sag though, and it was only the 96 and 97 models if i'm not mistaken.

I had it done on my '98 many years ago. If I remember correctly the Recall letter stated; as needing to be redone due to the potential for unsafe ride leveling caused by weak springs or something like this. All I can tell you is that within less than months the rear end sag was back. Honestly I'm not even sure the swap ever even corrected level height to begin with. The difference was so negligible I think I only imagined the butt lifted just to make myself feel better. If you want factory springs just get the '99 Tall springs and you'll be happy. You'll gain almost a full inch over all the other years in the 3rd gen range.
But that said I think at this age of your vehicle you'd definitely notice a difference if Toyota is still willing to honor the swap. It's only the rear springs though as I recall. It did not include new front struts.

Necroing a thread. I called toyota this morning and asked if the recall was still active. They said it stopped in 05 or 06. Anyone else have it done after that?

I bought our 97 4runner two years ago with 342k on it. Orig suspension! I went to Toyota and they said no issue on replacement. Didn't cost me a thing.
They might not have it posted anymore, but a recall is a recall.
By LAW, if you have original equipment the work HAS to be performed even if you're not the original owner.
I work for a bike manufacturer and if I get a recall across my desk It has to be handled, part/labor/all.
Just some added info, I purchased a 98 a few months back. Went to add some Firestone airbags to help with the sag, the cone shaped bumps inside the springs that your supposed to cut weren't there. Called the local dealer and the recall is still open, 96 to early 98 models. So it's currently getting fixed. Now I will have new springs and the bumps for the Airbags.

Nice!! I might suggest hooking the tech up with a Starbucks gift card or something. They really took care of me anyway. And on a 20+year old truck, LOL. Best of luck!

I had my rear springs replaced in 2015. safety recalls have no expiration.
