Rear Upper/Lower Trailing Arms: MetalTech vs ToyTec

Hi,

anyone know the difference between the two brands' rear trailing arms? I know Billet & Total Chaos sells them as well, but almost at twice the price, so I'm trying to decide between the MetalTech set or the ToyTec set. Anyone out there with experience with either of these trailing arm sets? Which ones are better? Pros and cons between the two?

Metal tech lower links are offset so the link won't contact the axle with their long rear shocks as the axle "floats" through compression/droop cycles. A typical 3/2" lift could easily run toy outfitters lower links with no problems. Uppers are nearly identical. I run MT lower since I have their long shocks and TO up top (MT wasn't offering their uppers when I got mine). Both have poly bushings and will require some maintenance to keep the squeaking at bay. Both outfits offer great service IMO but MT will probably ship out quicker.

I use the MT and they have been great. Very flexy (if that is even a word)

Very stout.

In most of these apps the rear shock limits the amount of flex. If you Install longer rear shocks you will get more droop. But it all works as a system, with the springs, bumpstops, sway bar, and upper/lower links synced to achieve your goals. How much lift do you run/are you trying to get?

When I was looking at obtaining more travel in the rear, I noticed that toytec did not offer extended bump stops. I also did not get a definitive answer on what size shock to go with.

So I called Brandon at MT they had just come out with the kit and offered all the parts in one kit, I felt that it was better to have one kit vs peace the kit together.

I have bought from both companies and felt that MT was the better choice for what I wanted in the rear.

The spring and shock combo that mt put together is amazing, I can run the desert at high speeds and it feels great. It also has lots of flex on the rocks.

I don't know which one provides more flex but the MT combo fit my needs and was complete out of the box.

After looking at reviews from loose_election , which I think had the kit on before it was released was the final selling point for me.

Sorry for the long reply but IMHO I think the MT kit is the better choice.

Hey guys,

I got a couple quick questions I'm hoping to figure out.

I have a 99' runner and just put a OME kit on with 906's in the rear. I didn't think that the 2" would tweak my pinion angle enough to really notice any change, but I get a slight vibration at higher speeds and now need to figure out whether I go adjustable control arms or if there are any other solutions?

and I am wondering if I would need to do all four control arms or if two would suffice the minor tweaking I probably need. I'm not sure on the difference yet, but hoping to get under the truck this week and check er out.

any advice would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking of going metaltech uppers and probably in a year or two when I get a little more serious and want to do a bigger lift go with lowers as well so I can save a few pennies for the time being.

Thanks

You may want to do the lowers first, even Metaltech shows their stage 5 being lowers only and their stage 6 being lowers and uppers. Most people here would say the lowers are more important too as they get bent over rocks and such.

agreed, the lowers are much more prone to getting struck by a rock or something else on the trails. ive seen the placement of the uppers and i would think it would take some very extreme angles for anything to even get close to the uppers. although id like to eventually upgrade both, i decided to upgrade the lowers first since they seem like they're placed in a much more fragile spot than the uppers are.

Cool-

thanks guys.

so I take it by your responses there shouldn't be any issues making adjustments with just one of the two pairs then?

anyone had any need to adjust pinion angle after an OME lift? I really thought I shouldn't have to worry about that sort of thing with a small lift like that.

I would be a bit concerned about the vibration with an OME lift. That was my first lift and no vibration. Just as a precaution, have you checked that one of the rear wheels didn't loose a balancing magnet? So many people run similar lifts w/o a problem, just seems odd that you are having this issue. You haven't disconnected the driveline recently for any reason, right. Sorry you're having to deal with this...

pearlj10-

haven't disconnected anything, serviced entire drive line and found no tell tale signs of problems. Trying to run though everything I can at home. Probably going to go back and have the tires re-balanced, and continue my search elsewhere. They did put a lot of weights on the tire compared to what have been on on the last two sets so maybe that is part of the issue, but it really does feel like something in the drive line.

I will keep everyone posted on any finds.
