"Rebuilding" a Toytec Ultimate coilover

So I am running a Toytec Ultimate. This weekend I will be replacing one of the shocks due to a bad valve (causing horrible vibration at highway speeds and cupping of the front tire). I really like the Ultimate, but it bugs me that the fronts are not rebuildable.

So here is my question... Has anybody replaced the Bilstein shock with a similar threaded body shock? Sway-A-Way has a 2" threaded body that has nearly identical specs (compressed/extended length, stroke, etc...), and it is completely rebuildable. Is there any reason that I couldn't do that? Basically I would be keeping the Eibach springs and the aluminum top mount. Looking at SAW's website, this would be significantly less $$$ than buying their complete coilover kit.

Not that I know of. Interesting idea though. Biggest issue I see is fitting the SAW top cap into the toytec mount. Hard to tell the mounting width, you may not be able to get a misalignment spacer small enough.

off the subject here. I'm thinking of getting the ultimate kit. do you have some pix of it on your rig you can share possibly? and how does it ride as daily?

Unfortunately they are $199 per shock and that has been the cheapest we have been able to get them for. If you need them, give us a call and we can get you some

Honestly it will probably be easier, cheaper and better to just get new coilovers. I've never ran the Toytec coilovers, but never found the appeal besides the price tag. $200 per shock isn't horrible, but considering a coilover rebuild is about $100 for both shocks if done by yourself it definitely reduces the allure of the 5100 coilover.

I already have my replacement, I ordered it last week. As for the $200 price tag, It really is a pretty good price for that shock. I think the cheapest that I have seen from other sources was about $240. You guys definitely offer very good customer service.

I really doubt that I will ever try to "frankenstein" a coilover. But being a guy that likes to tear stuff apart and try to put it back together, I was just curious to see if anyone had tried this.

My 650lb toytec coilovers are starting to cause vibration at around 60mph after 2 years of use. I am not positive that they are the culprit, but I just had an alignment and had my tires rotated/balanced. I may be looking to switch to some ICONs here soon.

Check to make sure that your tire tread isn't cupped or feathered. A bad strut will definitely cause that, and that is where the vibrations really start to get bad. To get rid of my vibration, I had to replace the shock and the bad tire.
