Red River Gorge, KY

Considering going to Red River Gorge Kentucky this weekend for some wheeling and camping. I have found a little information online through the BLM or USDA but not really trail descriptions, difficulty, directions, conditions, camping....you know the good stuff.

anybody have intimate knowledge of the area or can refer me to the source of said information? much appreciated.

and i guess if not that area, where could i go to do some "interesting" driving, see some cool things and camp safely. i am fully stock but am willing to take on a challenge.

also, if anybody else is going to be in the area, always up for a convoy.

Youre coming to the Red from CO? Are you a climber? Its one of the top destinations in the US. The hiking is awesome too. Im an avid climber and frequent the area regularly. Spent 88 days there in 2010 living in a tent and climbing.

There are numerous great places to stay but you kind of have to state a budget/activity plans for me to point you in the right direction. Backcountry passes available as well. Watch out for copperheads and check nightly for ticks.

As for wheeling, you really have to know the area or meet a local. You could definitely just drive around and explore the oil roads but they can get confusing and having someone helps. I have a ton of maps of the area through work and have explored a ton while bolting and finding new clifflines. My rig is currently getting some fabrication done but I may be able to steal it away for the weekend and come play.

unfortunately I am out of CO for the time being, coming from Cincinnati. from your info and the lack of knowledge on the area and our short trip i think we are going to take a rain check on RRG this weekend and maybe get down there when we have more time and some knowledge.

I do very little climbing but am always interested in learning more. Where in Indy are you? I went to North Central and my folks are still living near Butler.

any interest in doing some wheeling, shooting, climbing, camping in the Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio area this summer? let me know have a weird work schedule but plenty of time off in-between travel.

Dont let me scare you away, you can definitely have fun down there regardless. How long are you staying in the area? I live in Fishers, originally from Pittsburgh.

I do all of those things all the time in all weather/conditions. There isnt a ton of good stuff but we can manage with what we have. Feel free to PM me your info and we can set something up one weekend.

I don't know the area either but have google earthed the area and printed some maps. google map The Narrows, Powell County, KY or Zachariah 4WD Trail, Slade, KY and zoom down in on earth view. trails will appear.

I am looking for people to go explore with.

I have managed to get down to slade 3 times since this post. The trails can get a bit confusing and if you do not know where you are going you can get in over your head in a hurry. I would not recommend going out by your self.

Having said that, it just so happens that Saturday is the Kentucky Krawlers annual recruitment ride. I am not sure if I am going to make it but it is a good bunch of guys and I would recommend going.

The group ride was cancelled due to weather. Most of the trails cross over or are on private property as well so going out without someone who knows the area could get you into some trouble. Also the trails tend to be rough - 33" tires and skids are highly recommended at a minimum for the easier trails.

Im a Krawlers member and ride almost exclusively with other members from the area. Ive been going to the RRG for many years and I still get confused on some of the trails.

Gun hunting season doesn't start until November 14. Muzzleloader season is on the 17th and 18th, but they're not accurate at all. Youth season will be over on the 11th.
