I received my personal property tax bill (registration) few weeks ago, a whopping $186 for a ten year old vehicle with almost 200k miles! I read the fine print, you can appeal to the county auditor if your vehicle is high mileage.
So I take the afternoon off, goto the auditors office, wade through an hour of some bureaucratic bullshit, and they reduced my tax bill by a whopping $3.76!!!! Then move to the next window, I'm informed there is a $5 fee to pay with a credit card. The whole ordeal ended up costing me money!
Learned my lesson that day. Just pay "the man" and be done with it!

Nope. You're exactly right. It's insane what CA passes as taxes. Gas tax is complete BS. We already pay an infrastructure fee in our registration...it's buried in there. Then taking away a lane on already busy freeways and putting toll lanes that fluctuate depending on time of day. $3.50 to go 5mi!!!! Blows my mind, but doesn't surprise me as CA is the most expensive to live when it comes to everything, except maybe produce. Even breweries are now charging $25 for a 4/pk of 16oz cans. Absolutely laughable.

That is exactly the kind of BS we had to go through here in VA with the Bureaucracy that is basically set by each person at the City Hall desk. Each rep at the window has its own rules and if you’re lucky enough you might get a little reduction but they will make sure to make that up if you pay by Card (use it for the points) or check.
Don’t even get me started on tolls, tolls in VA can go up to $45 per car during rush hour. I want to say that driving a car in VA is the most expensive venture you can encounter. No one will do anything about it and if you complain you will get the most rude, incompetent, racist individuals that will make you feel rage beyond comprehension.

It's Highway Robbery in the most literal sense. And if that doesn't get you upset, CA charges something called a Smog Abatement Fee to anyone with a car under six years old. Owners of new vehicles get the privilege of paying an extra $20 per year for *not* having to get a biannual smog check for the first six years. It used to be $8, then $10, then $12, then... you see where this is going. Cha-ching. CARB (CA Air Resources Board) - a billion dollar bureaucracy run by people who weren't elected - has to pay for itself somehow.
The only good to come of our new Gas/Registration tax increase is the $100 surcharge added to electric vehicles. I don't really have a problem with that. Tesla drivers weren't paying any gas tax at all, and they already got a big government handout (tax credit) to buy the car in the first place.

Doesn't California have a gas tax already added to the price of gas at the pump, we here in South Carolina do?
The registration here is included in the personal property tax, which is based on the "Appraised Value", for my 2004 T4R it is $134, for my wife's 2010 Rav4 it is $145, for my daughter's 2007 Corolla it is $75.

Yep. CA has just about the highest gas taxes in the country, and this new gas tax raises them even further. On top of that, our Democratic supermajority state legislature just voted to renew a greenhouse gas "cap and trade" agreement that some say may raise the price of gas even further.
Back in September I went on vacation to the Big Island of Hawaii. I filled up my rental car at a gas station in Hawi, a tiny town on the northern tip of the island. Gas was a good $0.30/gal cheaper there than it was back in SoCal. That makes absolutely zero sense.

Well I guess it's obivous that California's Democratic majority is shooting for being the first state to entirely doing away with anything that burns gas and going completely electric!!

In Oregun...so far...no inspections/emissions check.
$86 to $112, I was thinking was a bit much but after seeing how others are getting raped by their state I guess its not to bad...yet.
That Gov we have now...will probably jam a check down our throats...and grab our guns while she is at it.

Seems like more and more just have minimum auto insurance...so the cops don't nab your car.
...Drivers license and registration...not so much...cost is apparently a joke.

Back on topic...I used to get upset because in Texas, they charge an extra $1 to process the registration by mail. My thought was, you know it's easier to do it that way. You should offer a discount. Do you really want 10 million drivers going to the DMV to pay this thing? Don't charge us to pay by mail, incentivize us.
After seeing the fees from other states, I think I'll start sending my $1 with a thank you note.
