Removal/replacemnet of tail light assembly on 2016 runner

Hey everyone, due to some expert parking I have to replace my passenger side tail light assembly. I would love to do it by myself as I can find replacements for around $120 whereas Toyota wants $270 for just the part. My issue is that I am unable to find any videos or info on how to remove the whole assembly and install the new one. Any help or links would be greatly appreciated!

There are (I think) 2 bolts to loosen from the back side under the access panel. Then you have to push firmly from the back to pop it out. There are pegs that keep it in place pretty snug.

there are a couple of nuts then you pull straight out the rear . plastic clips hold it in place which have fingers to keep it secure .

$120 sounds right on the price. spray some soapy water around the fixture outside so it may slide easier.

Yep only 2 nuts to remove that are behind the trim panel...but...the hard part is pulling the assembly away from the quarter panel. I would describe removing the assembly as more like yanking the head off a gator...I tried for about 2 hours thinking that I would break something....please use gotta rip em off...

Thanks! Looks like he removed the white plastic clips prior to the video. I am assuming those are what require the extra force to remove the assembly. The new tail light came yesterday so I will hopefully get it installed (with pictures) today if I have time after work.

Yes, they are TYC. They are a perfect match and feel and look very high quality. Reviews were great as well. Hopefully they continue to impress once connected.

I have 2014+ TYC's on my 2011 and have nothing bad to say about them.

I have them on my truck as well. I was just stating that I doubt for $120 they were OEM.

They are a great match, however, I've received two that started getting water into them. Both were passenger side. My driver side has been great. I'm waiting for my third passenger side to come in the mail. The second time I put a bead of silocone around the opening when I installed it and it still got A LOT of water in it. Fingers crossed third times a charm.

I know some OEM lights had this problem too.

That's good to know as well! I will keep a close eye on them after the install. Hopefully they will be fine otherwise I guess I will bite the bullet and get from dealership. Although it sounds like those may leak as well. Stupid reckless poleout:

I find it best to "firmly" strike them. It does take some force to get those clips to release.

if the light was hit it is possible the seating is not proper because of the metal distorted.

It wasnt hit. I simply wanted yo upgrade to the led lights.

I'll post pictures later of the water intrusion.

Thanks again for everyone's help. The light came out so smoothly. Two nuts and a firm wiggle and the light assembly popped right out. New light installed easily and looks great! One thing to note is that I did have to use a deep well 10mm to get the nuts out due to the long screws. Other than that it was a breeze!

Hey gonzorunner, how did that tail light hold up over time? Did you get water in it? I did the exact same expert parking and this thread helped me fix it. Wondering if the TYC part gets water in it from your experience...
