Removing sliding cargo tray?

There have been a few threads over the years about people removing and adding the sliding tray. One of them should help you out. I don't know if there is much of a difference between model years. Once you get your tray out, you'll have to cover the cargo floor with something though.

I installed the rear sliding cargo tray a few months ago and it was very straight forward. The removal of the carpet and stryrafoam was even more so. I still have all the parts (minus the hardware) in clean and mint condition. If you have an email I can send you photos if you're interested. Cheers!

Pop the two covers off the tray, and remove the bolts holding it to the slider. Remove the two tie downs behind the rear seat, and then remove that section. Then you can unbolt the sliding frame by removing the 4 bolts. The carpet will remain in place until you decide to convert that to a non-sliding carpet.
Should take you no more than 30 minutes to do this.
Non-sliding carpet will require you to remove the OE carpet. You'll need to purchase the foam for under the carpet, and the new carpet.

I pulled mine out in favour of a homemade cargo tray. It took about 10 minutes to pull the tray, sliding bracket and carpet out. Once it's out you'll be left with a bare metal floor, which I covered with sound deadening and then built a tray to go on top of, similar to a goose gear cargo tray.
If you want to go back to OEM flat cargo area, its best to find someone who wants to trade with you, because buying the foam/carpet and parts from Toyota can be pricey.

I would totally be down with that if you also threw in about $250. I’ve seen complete sliding trays go from $350 all the way to $750. My 4Runner is a 2019, with the OEM cargo tray mat as well (that was $100 alone) at Toyota.
Hi. Do you have any pictures/plans of what you built? I'm also in the process of removing my cargo tray and replacing with a home-made goose-style tray to attach my slide-out drawers to. Would love to compare ideas.

Mine is pretty caveman to be honest. I added the sound deadening first, then cut a piece of birch plywood as per instructions on Wanderlost Overland's video. It's just a chunk of ply with the sides cut out to contour around the 2nd row seats and the rear hatch trim plate. I countersunk the bolt heads so i wouldn't have any obstruction while sliding things in or out.
I'm going to remove it this spring and glue some indoor/outdoor carpet to it and that's about it. My plan is to use that as a base to attach a set of homemade drawers to easily. I reused the 2 factory bolts near the hatch as well as the 4 factory bolts near the 2nd row of seating to attach it to my vehicle.
Thanks. I'll check Wanderland's video again. That's pretty much all I want to do. Some sound deadening and a platform to build on. I have the drawer slides already and four Frontrunner boxes with all my gear. I will add some gear tracks on top for my waterport, and maybe build a removable part to create a sleeping platform.
