Removing XREAS - Is this cost fair?

Morning,

Getting my toytec ultimate lift today and got a call from the garage who is doing the install. They want to charge $190 extra to remove the xreas system. He said it would take 2 hours to depressurize the system and remove. Does this sound right? All the threads I have seen say "rip it out!".
takes no time at all if you don't want to preserve the system.

All in all, I am already committed, so I am going to pay, but don't like the feeling of an add on the day of the install.

What say you?

I did it myself, and found the hardest part was removing the plastic clips on the frame. I took me about 5-10 mins per side to remove the tubing and unbolting the brakets and center cylinder because I wasn't trying to keep them for latter use. I removed all the clips a few days later.

Just tell them to disconnect the shocks at the valves and leave the xreas lines in, then do it yourself after they put your lift in.

That's what I figured...did you de-pressurize it in that time also? Is that even neccesary to take it out?

I'm not too happy, but not sure there is much I can do about it. The garage is a customer of my employer, so I don't feel like I can cause too much of a stink about it. Just a little stink when I go to pick it up:biggrin1:

Thanks for the help, but...

Just called the garage to see if they could just disconnect at the fittings and I am too late. Oh well, just money right? Gives me a bad taste in my mouth, but this place has a great local reputaion for doing good work, so hopefully everything will be done well.

Seems kind of dirty that they would just do the work without authorization, I'd work on getting that work done free.

No, they called me and I told them go ahead. I was just stuck between a rock and a hard place...wasn't sure if the work should cost that much, but everything else was ready to go as far as the lift, tires, the truck there, etc.

I told him that what I had read, it was supposedely a pretty simple process to remove, but he said otherwise.

Learning moment, right? Hopefully the finished product will make me forget all about it!

What a rip-OFF. It's either a 8mm or 10mm wrench, can't remember which, and literally 30 seconds per shock to disconnect from the system. Boom. Then throw the shocks into the nearest garbage can.

I didn't even jack mine up, the fluid that came out was like ounces, not quarts. Just cleaned it up with oil-dry and wiped off my tools.

If you wanted for some reason to remove all the hard lines and reservoirs on frame rails, add 10 minutes.

I wish I could make $190 for 12 minutes worth of work.

That's a shady move by any garage. I wouldn't hesitate to tell my employer about that little tactic.

How about letting us know the name of the shop so those of us in CO know who to avoid?

on second thought - they might have material disposal rules (the xreas fluid) that they follow that you or I would not. Also it means they're probably following a prescribed procedure rather than common sense. That can be both good and bad. $190 is $190, but at least they didn't charge you $1090 . ..
