Replacing Trans Filter

90 T4R 4x4 w/ 3.0 engine. Just bout hitting the 200K mark and decided it's bout time to provide some tender lovin care, hell may even give it a coat of wax. Just completed front suspension and brakes and decided to replace spark plugs and wires; as well as, replace the transmission filter. If understand correctly, removing the transmission oil drain plug will also drain the transfer case. Also, it's not clear to me how much fluid it takes to fill both, it appears if I buy 7 qts. that should cover it?

There will still be a little less than a quart in the pan after you drain it. So when you drop the pan DON'T tilt it. Sh*t goes everywhere, at least I heard it does. I also removed the sway bar from the frame when I did my tranny filter. Makes the whole job a lot easier. Also I heard that when you lower the sway bar hold onto it cos it can swing down, hit you on the forehead and make you see stars. But that didn't happen to me either....

And yes 7 quarts is about right. Put in 5 or 6 then top it off with the engine running.

Appreciate everyone's input, now regret I did not replace the filter when I had the front end disassembled including the swap bar. O'well, intend tackling the project before the weekend. Again, thanks to all!!.

******Just replaced the plugs and ign wires but I could not fiqure out how to remove the coil wire. It appears there's a keeper incorporated in the connector that needs to be depressed while at the same time pull up on the connector. Fiddled with it for few minutes but decided that before I took 'big bertha' to it and broke something I would check to see if any member(s) could advise?

Swaybar is only 4 bolts connected to the frame rails. Not a big deal. Loosen them up and let it hang for a few minutes..... And HellRazur, it didn't, I swear. At least there aren't any witnesses to dispute me!

its not really a filter that needs to be changed. its just a mesh screen. you can remove it and clean it

Thanks for the info; unfortuately, already purchased the kit, it came with the screen and both gaskets for $20. Hopefully, I will not have to remove the pan again, if so, I will salvage the gaskets and just clean the screen. Thanks again!.
