I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to restore the removable top on a 1st gen 4runner.The sun has done it's damage over the last 20 years and the black isn't so black anymore.

I asked at Checkers today while I was there and they recommended just a really good waxing. They`re normally pretty good for car advice even if they overcharge for their wash supplies. I doubt that`s going to help a lot with my top since it`s been exposed to the AZ sun for 20 years with no wax on it for half of that but I`ll see and post the results. The people I`m pet sitting for have given me permission to use their air conditioned garage(thank god!) so I`ll see what 10 days of working with scratch-x and mothers cleaner wax will do.

I used scratch-x on the top followed up by the cleaner wax and my top is now the darkest part of my Runner.:D Depending on how well cared for your top was your results may be different but it worked great for me. If you decide to try the scratch-x check at Wal-Mart. They were only $7 a tube at mine. The auto specialty stores want $10. Quik Detailer was cheaper there too. Now I just need to do the rest of my 4R. We had a mini storm that pushed some cooler air in front of it so I was able to wash and do the top at a half way reasonable time but otherways I`m back to working on it at 4am in this heat. Hope this helps.

No problem. I just happened to be in the middle of trying to restore my own 4Runners top when you posted. I`ll try to post some before/after pictures later.

Here`s a before/after of just the trim. I went over it with Mequiars Natural Shine. It can also be used on your dash (vinyl) and tires(rubber) so it`s not a one time use thing to waste money on.

The big pics show the difference more clearly though.
