**Rickashay's Camping & 4WD Adventure Thread**

With my goal of being back on the forum more (and less on IG) in 2021, I've been trying to get my build thread up to date HERE. In doing so, I thought I might as well split off my 4WD trips and keep my build thread, focused more on the truck build and it's maintenance.

Sorry for the partial overlap on my recent build thread posts, but as I wrap my head around this, I think having a separate thread makes sense. I don't get out as much as I used to with a baby, new business, and another new venture in the works but still.... I basically take pictures/video for a living, so why the hell not?! ;)

Because I'm feeling a little anxious lately with all the COVID travel restrictions, let's start by reminiscing about our Utah 2019 trip.

Then it was time for a couple days in Moab.

We were stoked to run some trails (duh).

Then I picked a bad line and my aluminum skidplate buckled (yes, I know aluminum isn't as strong as steel - more on this later) and smashed the corner of my radiator.

Then we fixed my truck and hung out by a fire for a couple days just bullshitting. It was unexpected and ended up being totally awesome and relaxing. Great hanging with good people, especially when you don't see them all the time!

So we parted ways with this final image:

Get after it. Can’t express how much the “big” 4WD trips make a lasting effect. They are the ones we always talk and reminisce about, years down the road. Hell, you’re even close (ish) to Moab.

Time to get this thread caught up.

Summer 2020

As we all very well know, COVID certainly changed a lot of plans this summer. We made lemonade from lemons and did quite a few trips this summer right in our own backyard.

The following was a trip with my family and some good friends. We made basecamp at one of our favorite camp spots, a spot that my wife and I first discovered on our honeymoon road-trip. We've been going back every summer (multiple times) for the past 5 years. Some of the best trips (in my opinion) are the ones when you are doing a variety of things out of the truck - camping, hiking, 4WD, and lots of down time.

Always a fan of your photography! Stellar stuff! Just bought an old Nikon D7000 and hope to get some good shots this year. I'll keep checking back here for inspiration.

Bumping this back up.

Last year I actually got out on quite a few trips. But now that I work full-time in photography and video production, sometimes it's nice to leave the camera at home and just enjoy the moment.

I did however have one trip in early September that pulled through unexpectantly. My wife decided to run to Alberta for a week and visit her family. She of course, wanted to bring our 14 month old (at the time) daughter with her. I had too much work to leave for that long, so I had to stay. BUT seeing the window of opportunity, I hustled for a few long days to "get ahead of the ball" in terms of work, so I could free up 3-4 days at the end of the week for a trip with the boys! We rallied the troops and it was decided that a trip to Whipsaw was in order.

Thursday afternoon we met up in Nelson and pointed our trucks for the legendary trail.

Driving through the Okanagan as the sun is lower in the sky is always a pleasure! This is basically the Napa valley of Canada.

This was our first morning at camp at the very start of Whipsaw. What you can't see in the photos was that every step in the grass, led to a "poof" of very fine dust exploding into the air. It was just SO dry out there at this time of year.

I tried this section a few moments before. (larger rocks than photos do justice) I had to try a more left approach with the "small" 35's. I became high centered on the top of the rock and despite a few good progressive "bumps" I never made it up and over. Oh well, I tried, and it was fun but there is no need to get cowboy and brake my truck so I backed down and got Ron to show me what's up. Of course he idled right up.

Moments later we actually ran into a group trying to get up one of the famous rock obstacles on the trail. One truck had a broken driveshaft and a crowd was gathered as an old Cherokee bounced off the rev limiter several times in an attempt to make the climb, stalled, and almost rolled the truck several times as dozens of drunken onlookers cheered. Ron, then locked both axles and idled up the huge face with literally no throttle or tire spin. Then we left. Mic drop. haha wish I had photos of this!

The lake at the halfway marker. What you're not seeing are all the massive crowds of people. I can't believe how much this trail has changed since i did it 8-10 years ago. Sad how much people abuse the trail systems and leave their waste and garbage behind.

We decided to push onward and get out of the chaos.

We ended up basically pushing to the last few kms of the trail to make camp. We found a good (quiet) spot after basically running the entire trail in a single day. It was tons of fun despite the chaos of all the drunks and people tearing up new mud puddles in the alpine meadows and the copious amounts of dust. But it's easy to forget the negatives when you are beside the fire with your buds and the sky does this:

That's hilarious, I was just scrolling through to look at the pictures and I did a double-take when I saw that one. I thought you were down here on Silverado Trail for a sec. Looks just like home.
