Ring and pinion problem?

Last night on my way home, cruising around 55mph, I heard a loud squeal which sounded like a belt was slipping. I stopped and the squeal went away. I tried to start going again and the truck barley would move. I put it in 4wd suspecting the rear diff went out and was able to limp home the final mile.

Took the rear drive shaft off and jacked the rear wheels off the ground. The pinion seems like it's seized, it barley rotates. I can rotate the wheels fine though(open diff).

Diff oil was changed 2 months ago.

Should I get parts to rebuild the 3rd member or just find a used or new one, preferably with a locker in it?

Sounds like a bearing went out. Could have happened for a number of reasons, but that's my guess.
 
I'd pull the 3rd and do some investigating. Also, note any leaking around the seams. Don't forget to take pics! If it's shredded inside, just get a 3rd from ECGS. If you were ever planning on regearing, this might be a great opportunity to do the front clamshell as well.

Sucks, I had the 3rd out 2 months ago to reseal the mating sufaces.
Everything looked good.

This is what happens when you install a supercharger on a vehicle with 260k on it :)

I think I will order a 3rd member from ECGS with a Detroit true track in it.

I think I have a 3.90 gear ration would anyone like to verify this?

According to my vin plate: VZN185L-GKMGKA indicates A 3.90 ratio.
The A03A code generally means 4.10 ratio

1 revolution of the tire makes the drive shaft appear to spin almost twice. it took a lot of force to spin the tire to make the pinion spin so it was kind of difficult to get a good measurement.

Just to be clear if both tires are off the ground the tires spin freely in opposite directions, so the brakes aren't binding up. Drive shaft has been removed too.
 
I just dealt with this cause my pinion bearings were shot (the replacement not the symptoms) A03A is 4.10 all day, I did a lot of research. Also if it makes you feel any better I bought my 4.10 for my A03A from a truck with a completely different VZN185L-XXXXXX. I think the method is lifting 1 wheel and spinning it twice. Should be a little past 4 drive shaft turns. I put 2 pieces of white electrical tape, one stationary and one of the shaft lined up with each other to start n spun it.
 
The VIN is no way to verify the gear ratio. The paint code on the pinion is more accurate, but you have to pull the third member anyhow, so why not pull it to be 100% sure you get the right ratio?

Good choice on the Trutrac. It's probably the best limited slip available and has great on-road driving characteristics.
 
Little update

Took the 3rd out, pinion lost a tooth.

41 teeth on the ring and 10 on the pinion so 4.10 gear ratio.
 
It's not that it's wrong, it's just not specific in every case enough or possible to be specific enough.

The code for my axle for example could be either 4.10 or 4.30, with 4.30 being optional. There's no way to tell if the vehicle had the optional gears or not unless you have an original invoice or some sort of passed on first hand knowledge.

Personally I used the paint code on the pinion to tell what gears it had and verified it when the carrier was pulled.

You wouldn't happen to have a paint code chart? My pinion was painted blue.
 
No luck finding the link. Go to google and search on Toyota pinion paint code. Should be easy to find.
