I know most of the 4runner owners here can fend for themselves when stuck in a rut or in an emergency situations, but for me I'm very light in skills when it comes to emergency involving cars. so what are your basic emergency kit or tools that you have in your (for daily driving) truck? when not off-roadiing of course. I'm trying to buy one.

My “kit” is also stuff that I keep in my go bag that stays in my truck. Here’s stuff I consider essential.
-work gloves
-leatherman tool
-knife
-lifestraw (water filter)
-paracord
-fire starter
-emergency sleeping bag
-glow sticks
-small to go roll of gorilla duct tape
-flashlight
-ratcheting screwdriver with the different bits that hide in the handle.
Toyota makes a generic emergency kit that could get you started. But better yet just go on Amazon and look up emergency kits, see what they have and get better stuff that works for you. Such as Mechanix gloves, not the crap in the kits.
Think about what you need for minor fixes to get out of a jam then think about what you need to survive on the side of a road in no where and no one is gonna be there anytime soon. Then also think about what you would need in an earthquake since you’re in Cali because emergency services may be a couple days getting to you and anyone else trapped with you.

and if you know youre driving somewhere where you know you won't see services for miles... bring tons of water... i cant stress this enough
wife and kids were stuck nonstop on the freeway between Las Vegas and Southern Utah for 9 hours! Because some road raging dick**** decided to run someone off the road. Guess what they needed most? Water.
Got small children? Leave a whole pack of diapers in the car at all times. Doubles up as a giant bandage if you need it.

[MENTION=199002]dslrjunky[/MENTION] are you asking about only on-road, or was that a separate question. if you are just asking about on-road driving, unless those roads are in the middle of nowhere the basic kit would just be a cell phone and AAA
regardless of on-road or off-road, i recommend carrying enough supplies for you and any passengers to at least spend the night in the vehicle comfortably (i.e. enough food, water, a couple blankets, etc... and make sure it is appropriate for your climate and location) as well as a change of clothes and some toilet paper/wet wipes.
As far as a first aid kit I think this is really helpful, especially if you have children, but unless you are remote having the bump and bruise type stuff isn't critical since this stuff can wait until you get home or to a drug store or something. I'd recommend getting a tourniquet and knowing how to use it (lots of videos online) for a kit for things that are immediate needs and can't wait and make sure it's easy to get to (at minimum i'd include the tourniquet, aspirin, benedryl, glucose paste, gloves and go from there). I keep a big kit in the back and a trauma kit on the drivers door.
a flashlight or headlight and leatherman-type multi-tool are also very useful for all kinds of things, including non-emergency stuff
from there you can start adding any tools or other things that you want that make sense for where you are and your experience level (i.e. a detailed toolbox is a waste of space if you are in a metro area with AAA and you have no plans to work on the vehicle yourself)

I cant speak for off roading of any sort - but all my vehicles have a big first aid kit, jumper cables, tire plug kit, cig lighter air pump, spare tire / tools, and some basic hand tools. I also try to keep an extra (small) first aid kit in the glove box for easy access to minor meds and bandaids.
I also try to keep a multi tool, pocket knife, glo sticks and small cheap space blankets in the big first aid kit. Currently putting together a bug out bag with a compressible blanket, pillow, eno hammock, compass, and rations. I use the blanket, pillow, and hammock regularly with baseball practices and such. Nice to be able to recline in the backseat or under a random tree and take a nap.
