Roadtrip tips

Planning on our first trip with the 4Runner this October and wanted to see if any of you had any tips. We will be doing the same trip we did last year with my Wrangler that i traded in for the 4Runner. Starting out from St. Louis and going out to Colorado Springs, then to New Mexico Angel Peak camp site, then will spend the resto of the time in Moab area. My 4Runner is stock, i am waiting for a C4 bumper so i can put my wench in hopefully before the trip and ive installed Victory 4x4 cross bars for the rooftop tent since my Gobi rack wont be ready any time soon.

We did this trip with a mostly stock Sahara Wrangler last year and we dont plan on doing any of the rocky trails like hells revenge but wanted to see if anyone has any tips or things to look out for.

Take the time to check all the passes and back roads are actually open before you plan your route, so that you don't have to wing it and get in a fight with your exhausted girlfriend while you frantically search for a camping spot in the dark after doing a massive detour which results in you threatening to drive her to straight to the airport and fly her home because you're not going to let her ruin the trip where you get to actually use 4LO for once and you've been looking forward to for ages and have screwed up yourself through lack of planning and by leaving everything to the very last minute as usual.

Hahahahaha this sounds oddly specific but good tip!
 
First thing I recommend is research any and everything you plan on doing. Make sure the trails are open (seasonal, flash floods, wildfire, etc), where you want to camp, and determine if permits are required.

Here's a basic list than can expand dependent on what you plan on doing/going

tools
tire repair
emergency valve stems
extra oil and coolant
*portable jump start (if you plan to run a fridge or anything at camp for extended periods of time)
*traction boards (not necessary but a nice insurance if you're going solo)
*air compressor (if you plan on airing down)

Prescription meds
Normal OTC meds (pepto, imodium, allegra)
Cut/bruise/ kit
Tourniquet (if you’re trained)
Irrigation tool/saline
Bandage/gauze/splint material (a magazine will do in a pinch)
Shears/tweezers/swabs
Gloves
Pocket mask/shield

*Fire extinguisher or two
*Spare water
*good multitool
*duct tape/paracord/zip ties
* spare fuses
* cash (in various denominations) in case of atm failures. A lot of backwater places don’t have applepay.

* mesh covers for windows to allow windows open/bug free evenings in car.
* packing/gear cubes - i like cotepaxi but anything from amazon will work too. Makes it much easier to find things.

Its best to keep your "wench" on the inside of the vehicle...they are less moody.

Also, if you have not figured this out....let your better half drive the trails some too. Its always more fun to drive than ride...and they will enjoy the trip more.
 
First thing is check your spare tire pressure. Check fluids. Do a visual check under the hood and under the truck for stuff obviously hanging off like it should not be.

Secondly, think through weather situations and have clothes to meet all conditions. Be ready to get soaked and it not kill you from the cold.

Thirdly, stash some snacks and water to get you through 48 hrs of being stranded. Add in some baby wipes for your butt and for cleaning off a little.

Tools obviously. Nothing crazy, but a wrench set is common sense. As another stated, traction boards if you intend to do real off reading.

The rest, to me, is personal preference.

There is a pretty decent trail in the needles district canyonlands NP of Moab right near the visitor center take that trail all the way out. ����
 
Medano Pass?

If you're going from the Springs to the 4 corners area ever thought about doing Medano Pass? Haven't done it myself but it's on my list... Doesn't sound technical, about a 3hr detour(or camp along the pass) and it dumps you out in Great Sand Dunes NP.
 
The Lake Powell recreation area is super easy roads with fantastic views over the lake. If your coming in on I-40 west its worth to stop in Page AZ; hit the Bird House in Page for the best fried chicken Ever in the history of fried chicken. Page AZ and the recreation area is on the Utah side of the lake but its all right in the same area, easy dirt roads, fantastic views, good food and nice hotels in Page if the wife wants a hot sower.

Fourmile area near Buena Vista is really cool as another option. Good place to camp for the night and the trail makes a great "warm up" on the way to the heavy stuff. Buena Vista is a great little town.
 
Totally agree about Buena Vista! Stayed there a few times to backpack in the Collegiate Peaks and for an overnight stay to ski Monarch and Breckenridge. It's a good midpoint between the two.
