I don't have the roar, but I have the Hikeit. I bought it on a black Friday deal, and installed it late December and have been very happy with it. No check engine lights, and it actually really does work as advertised.
One thing I like about this one is that it has an "auto" mode, meaning that it will be as aggressive as your throttle inputs. Even driving gently, it's a little bit more aggressive than stock, but not as crazy as some of the sport or race modes.
When I run in auto, what I really like about it is that it just gives the accelerator a more immediate feel. It eliminates that dead spot that you have to push through in order to trigger a downshift, with the downshifts coming on more readily and with less drama, I'm able to hold speed on hills better, which makes it less frustrating to drive.
Another mode that it has is the Eco mode. Eco makes it mostly worse to drive then stock, however, I think the Eco mode would be great for off-roading because it's really smooth. I think for technical off-roading where you don't want a lot of throttle inputs, the Eco mode would be fantastic. Haven't had a chance to try this out yet though. I've been using the eco mode the last couple weeks, I have seen an increase in fuel economy, about 1- 1.5mpg as compared to running it in auto. Depending on how much you drive, it may not be worth a frustration to run an eco. I drive a lot, so if I can gain one MPG during my commute, that's almost an extra trip to work per tank.
I paid $119 for this on the Black Friday deal, and last I saw I think they're running a sale for $169. Definitely worth it.
Oh, one other interesting feature it has, that I haven't used yet, is the "hike it" button. If you have this mounted on your dash where it's easily accessible, there is a button that you push that will set it to the most aggressive input, then you press the button again and it will set you back to your previous selection. In the literature it says this is great for when you really need to pass somebody on the highway or similar. I haven't had the need to use it yet, and I don't have my controller mounted where it's visible. I'm more of a set it in forget it type person.
