ROLA rack = POS

For those of you looking into buying this roof rack....DONT. Its a complete piece of ****. Its built poorly, the holes to put the screws in don't mount up, the ROLA stickers that came on it have already completely faded and worst of all.........it has completely rusted. So much rust that it has actually dripped all the way down the sides and back of my runner.

The place I purchased it from says that they've never heard of this happening before and that I should take it off, clean it, repaint it and seal it. To me that is absolutely ridiculous. If I should have to do any of that those products should be shipped with the unit and I should not have to do it to an already damaged unit. I've only had it on for 2 months!

Anyway......If I were you guys I would skip this rack and buy something better. Thanks for listening.

Same thing happened to mine. I believe I had a post on the rusting. I had to dismantle and clean up the rust areas and apply primer/paint. Then I added sealant to the connecting sections so the dripping rust water has stopped. I guess I did what they suggested to you. Sucks because I only had mine for a short period as well before noticing brown streaks on the sides and back of my Runner. Rolas are the cheaper rack as far as cost goes but I was hoping for a little more quality. For $150 its still a decent rack, but I agree you shouldn't have to deal with rust less than a year later.

You get what you pay for a decent powder coat job is at least$ 100 something has to be lacking for$ 150 price tag compare quality and price to the other racks like yakimia who has a massive line and get their materials and coatings on the cheap by sheer volume alone.

Others haven't had this problem so you most likely got a bad run, id imagine these are painted on a conveyor and possibly yours got fubared seems like they should help you out since it's only been 2 months.

Either way i guess you just buy some paint and get after it or try and find a powder coat for cheap and call it good. You'll save money by doing the prep your self.

Sealing the leaking areas will trap rusty water in the rack and could lead to the pipes filling with water, which will freeze and bulge or burst those pipes in cold climates.
If you are going to seal the leaks, make sure you seal everywhere water can enter the rack.

Well u may have jsut gotten a lemon... i mean ive heard of a few ppl who have holes that dont match up but thats wat power drills are for. I have had mine on my 4runner ever since i first bought it (about 8 months ago) and well everything seems to be fine. There might be a small amount of surface rust but its bc of me not the manufacturer.

I had some rusting from where both side connect until I sealed the joints. I would say these are from being POS but again you do pay for what you get.
Good luck

That sucks man, my sticker faded but i just had another one made for $10 and now mine still looks good as new! I've had mine almost 2 years now, however i take it off every once in a while cause i honestly don't need it all the time, Especially for the ski season, Id recommend taking it off in the salty times of the year?

:happens:

I think it just might be that you're in Oregon, since mine is doing great, I got it with the extension in February and haven't taken it off since. I'm also able to park my t4r in the garage too :nerd:

I bet if you just gave it a good coat of rustoleum or something like that it would be a lot better. I have no problems with the rack other than the fact that it sits up too high, which could be fixed easily if I made some custom mounts which I just haven't gotten around to.

I didn't really care for the rola sticker on my wind deflector, so I sanded it off, gave it a coat of paint, and put on a TRD sticker. :surfer: I think there is too many TRD logos on it now, so it will probably come off when I mount some lights up there, we'll see.

BTW: Has anyone mounted some lights on their ROLA rack yet?

I did just to see what it would look like. I only mounted two. One on each side of the spoiler, but I plan on mounting two more soon and get rid of the spoiler completely. I think racks with 4 lights look a lot better.

i have lights mounted on mine... originally i was going to use the KC hilight mounts but at $20 each i decided against it since i have 6 lights (4 front and rear). I just ended up marking out the center spots and drilled holes. Sry i dont have any close up pics but if u want some i can get them after class...
