"The owner was fishing on the west coast of British Columbia when the clasp of his Submariner hooked onto his fishing rod, broke a pin on the bracelet and fell overboard. His first reaction was to record the coordinates on his GPS so he knew within a few meters of the "Drop Zone"

It just so happened that not far from this particular location there was a dredging barge, that moves sediment from the oceans floor working on a regular basis, so he contacted them asking to search the area on occasion (at a cost of 85.00 per hour) to see if the watch could be found. For some extra incentive he offered 1000.00 cash if the watch was recovered.

Very cool article! The durability and ruggedness of the watch does not surprise me at all!!

I have had my Submariner for 10 years now and it still looks and runs like the day I bought it, despite banging it into door jams and many other things over the years.

The saffire crystal is just unbelievably scratch-proof!!:bluejump:

I'll stick with my $40 Timex, thank you very much. If I drop it in the ocean, I'll just go get another one (and buy another truck with the Rolex balance--LOL). Seriously, though, Rolexes are impressive pieces of technology.

Thai, no I have not ever had my Rolex serviced. I know it is recommended about every 5 years. Mine is 10 years old now and still runs great!

I just can't bear to part with it even for a month! I wear it every day and rarely even take it off.

Maybe I can send it in for service when I get a new GMT!! LOL

We did send in the YM for servicing because it was running very fast by 5 year period. In addition, the date wheel would get stuck. Yeah, i was disappointed with that Rolex. Both Rolex were bought new. I am hoping that i have better luck with the TOG.

Cool story, but that watch looks trashed. I'm trying to figure out where the guy got any value from the $1000 finders fee and the money it would have cost to get the dredger in that area until they found it? Surely that watch can't be refurbished to a presentable state, right?

I don't know whether polishing can restore it. However, the fact that the watch still works is pretty cool. A G-shock may survive too, but a Rolex is pure mechanical device and this does add to the excellent case design of the Rolex.

Thai.....I like your Rolex TOG. You dont see as many of those as some other models. I am surprised that you had the issues with the date wheel and the date wheel getting stuck. So far my Submariner has performed flawlessly since I bought it new 10 years ago. The only "issue" with mine is it will run about 3 to 4 minutes fast over a one year period. I will re-set it every now and then. I think just that small amount is acceptable especially given the fact it's entirely self-winding with the automatic movement.

TOG was discontinued earlier this year i believe because of slow sales. I don't mind...just makes mine more rare! My TOG is running about 2-3 seconds fast/day.

The watch could have been given to him by someone and it could hold some sort of invaluable sentimental value.
