Roman's Runner Build/Progress Thread

First a little background from my introduction in the New Member's Playpen.

My wife and I spent Christmas with family in Colorado, and part of that trip included a skiing trip at Monarch. For this trip I used a family member's 98 Rodeo with 335k miles. 70% of the trip was on ice and snow-covered roads. I had a blast - and so did the wife. She suggested I look into buying a 4wd "something" that would double as baby and dog-duty for me (when that moment does arrive). She knows that I don't want to subject my gti to the torture of child and dog transport, and green-lighted this project. I was ecstatic.

I began my search with a $2,500 budget. Naturally, I started looking for Rodeos, since that vehicle is what I had most recently spent quality time in. Very quickly I learned I was searching for the wrong vehicle. I had always admired the 3rd gen 4Runner, and after reading here, I fell in love and now will consider nothing else. However, I also quickly learned that budget was way too low. These things hold their value!

I'm looking for a 99+ with around 150k miles. Yes, I know those are difficult to find unless I want to take out a loan, which I don't want to do for a toy/beater. Understand that this won't be a "beater" per se. I want the truck to be reliable and comfortable, but I want something that I won't have to feel I need to wash every week or care if some prick opens his door into it in the parking lot, or if the child spills their Cheerios in the back seat. It will be a workhorse in the winter, getting occasional use other times if I need to transport the dog and/or child. Her one requirement is an automatic tranny. I hate it, but I can row my own gears in the gti, so *sigh* okay.

For now, my search continues, so I am spending my free time eating up knowledge here, bookmarking maintenance and cheap mod pages so I am fully prepared when my truck chooses to reveal itself to me. Cheers!

Well, I found one! Well, I found a few actually. I scoured Craigslist, ebay, and as many used car dealers I could find. I found one that really stood out to me. This Runner had just been listed a few hours before I found it. A 99 Limited with 193k miles in very decent condition for $2,900 - at a dealership. That sounded odd to me, as that is about a grand cheaper than I would expect to find at a dealership. KBB on this truck is $3,300 in beat-up condition. I drove the 3 hours to State College, PA and checked it out. I put a deposit down on it to hold my first-in-line spot. Apparently there were 7 others in line behind me. I drove it and went over it with a fine-tooth comb, thanks to what I learned here. After a few minutes, the salesman stopped trying to sell me on the Runner, since it was obvious I knew what I was looking for. I drove it, tested out all systems, and everything checked out. Here she is pictured next to my other toy.

The timing belt was replaced at 122k. No pink milkshake. The first two owners kept maintenance records from 0 miles until 125k miles. The third owner did not. There are 65k miles worth of missing maintenance records, so I intend to do the following immediately:
- Spark plugs, wires, coils
- PCV (need some guidance whether this is necessary)
- New radiator for peace of mind
- Coolant flush
- ATF flush
- Diffs and TC fluid change
- Inspect ball joints, endlinks, tie rods, rear axle seals
- Inspect brakes
- Inspect all other fluids, replace/flush if necessary
- Fuel filter
- Am I missing anything?

Known/discovered issues:
- No remotes were included in sale, will buy from Toyota
- HVAC control on the fritz (I hate auto! Give me knobs and levers!!)
- Hatch keyhole seized. Hopefully a healthy dose of WD-40 should loosen things up
- Driver seat bottom is a hot mess (see photos above)
- Windshield wiper fluid sensor broken. Light on dash stays on even when reservoir is full. I'll just remove the bulb

I don't think I'll do any heavy modding. I'll likely remove the running boards, but at this point not interested in a lift or bigger tires. 31" is plenty for the way I'll be driving this.

I love this truck and am looking forward to many fun years with it!

I would do the tranny cooler now whether you plan on nodding or not and save yourself the trouble.

Clean Lil rig man. Congrats!

New tires, running boards removed. Full Maryland inspection. LBJs replaced, all shocks replaced, valve cover gaskets replaced, spark plugs replaced, rear axle bearings and seals replaced, transmission flushed. New wiper blades, air filter and MAF cleaning later today.

Thanks to @jrzee2000t4rltd for the rebuilt clock and HVAC unit. Also I fixed it to display in F instead of C.

I discovered that it has a lean toward the driver side. Driver side front and rear ground to fender is 35" and passenger side front and rear is 36"

Some research shows that 4runners and Tacos both suffer from this. What I couldn't find was a solution. Has anyone else noticed the lean? Did you do something about it?

That sounds really cheap. Was it a salvage title or something? Or the dealer didnt know how popular they are?

So this happened.

Yikes.

I have a feeling my driver side cargo window looks like this underneath. Everytime i wash it crud comes out of the gasket weep holes and there was rust stains below them which i clay barred off a while ago.

Nice deal you got and good thing dealer honored the original price. What happened with the window, leaking? It's in pretty good shape considering the age and mileage on it.

Well, sure it's in decent shape. The bumpers and wheels need serious attention. It looks good from 10 feet away but up close you can see the flaws. It seems to be mechanically sound, which is more important to me.

Based on what was posted above, the windshield weather stripping on these trucks is not designed well. It traps water and doesn't channel it away from the frame very well. The water sitting in there caused the rust. If you have a northern truck, take a peek under your seal. I'm betting you have some rust under there. If you're incapable of unseeing things, then don't look.

I had every intention of disabling DRLs on the truck and then washing my GTI. Well, I decided to try and remove the rusty license plate screw without a head in the rear. I failed.

The plate can be mounted with one screw. Can't find any way around that, because I don't feel like removing the rear window unit.

By the way, sheet metal is sharp.

Since it was so easy to remove interior panels, I decided to check under the carpet and make sure there was nothing nasty hiding.

So I cleaned, and kept moving my way forward. I swear I removed an entire meal from underneath the rear seats and carpet from the PO's kids. So I cleaned the carpet and Lysol-wiped the metal underneath.

Then I decided to clean the HVAC fan. Oh, and then I did disable the DRLs by snipping the black/yellow wire. But I about gave myself a heart attack when I started the truck and tested it, only to find that my headlights didn't work at all. Shit. Oh, look at that, moron. You didn't plug the unit back into the box. :bonk:

Oh, and the VW is still filthy. But the truck is spotless inside.
