Roof Bars for 2014 trail edition--and storage ideas

Hey guys,

I want to put a storage pod (Thule, etc) on top of my 14 Trail model. What are the appropriate cross bars?

And what pod do you guys recommend? Nothing super duper extreme, just for transporting family stuff on out of state trips.

If all you want to do is mount a Thule rack, the factory bars are more than adequate.

Or go to any REI, Thule outfitter and get an aftermarket Thule rack installed.

I get the factory roof cross bars as an option and carry a Thule Excursion up there 9 months out of the year. Loaded with chain, ash, come along, shovel, chain saw etc well over 200 lbs and it holds up fine. I like the Excursion but it is cumbersome on the 5th gen to access from the rear bumper cause the rear spoiler sits flush with the roof and there is no place to grab onto when climbing up. So I put it as far forward as possible and access it from climbing onto rear rocker panel then onto the rear tire. This also helps with XM reception. If I had to buy a new one I'd look at another Thule but a model that opens from the side instead of the rear. And IMO just get factory cross bars.

Be careful with the factory crossbars. I have a Yakima skybox roof to carrier that per Yakima support, will not work with the factory bars. They said it was due to the lack of clearance and that the stock crossbars flex.

Technically the carrier would fit without aftermarket crossbars, but it would probably scratch the roof.

You might want to check the compatibility specs on any aftermarket roof accessories.

Although I have Yakima cross bars on my wife's escape that I could transfer over, I'm going to try to rack first.
