Roof cargo bars?

Hi All,

Does anyone know of a good option for simple roof cargo bars? I don't want a full rack or basket. I want to remove the factory rails and install a simple, sturdy bar at the back and another at the very front of the roof (straddling the sunroof). Ideally the bars would be easy to take on and off so I could just throw them on to go get a couple of sheets of plywood and then take them off for quiet, economical road trips. Does anyone sell anything like that?

Best to keep the factory side rails for you really need to mount anything new to the factory bolt holes in the roof. For cross bars, you have lots of choices. You can get used factory cross bars on Ebay for a good price. All the aftermarket roof rack people, such as Yakima and Thule, sell just cross bars to fit the factory rails. The problem with the factory cross bars are they are too close to the roof to attach a cargo box (Yakima skybox); to solve that problem I got an OMAC cross bar set.

What your suggesting would require bolting on roof racks to the factory holes every time you want to use the rack. You don't really want to do that as the captive nuts inside the roof are not intended for that, and it could lead to leaks etc.
LFD OFFROAD does make a basic cross bar for our trucks that bolts to the factory attachment points.
Personally, I use a trailer.

Yeah, I would keep the factory roof side bars and just get some simple LFD Off Road cross bars.

One of the things I'd really like is a much wider spacing between the bars than the short factory rack allows so using the existing rails doesn't seem like an option?

I quite like my lfd off-road cross bars. I picked up two before last camping trip, needed a spot to put my gazelle t4+ tent. They seem quiet in the marked positions on the factory rail, I got the steel ones. I plan on getting one more or the wide one and their wind fairing.

Some of the "universal fit" cross bars extend beyond the mounting posts, so they would be wider than the OEM cross bars. Personally, I think these bars that extend beyond the side of the vehicle are ugly, but you see them all the time. They still attach to the factory rails.

I have the same problem. The SkyBox 16 mounts ok on the factory crossbars 2020 4Runner ORP, but those crossbars are lower than my 2011 Trail were. Which crossbars did you get from OMAC? They show 2, one set with locks. My SkyBox has about 1/4" clearance between the latches and the roof w/o a load, bumpy roads, wind and general flex. What was Toyota thinking? Reduce wind noise? Improve gas mileage? This is atypical for Toyota.

LFD Offroad makes a "minimalist" roof rack that provides a bar across each of the factory mounting points. LFD Off Road - Minimalist Overland Rack

I ended up ordering these from OMAC per their suggestion. Their other one is too similar to the low OEM crossbars. This one rests on top of the side rails.
