Roof Rack Alternative

So, my '02 has the plastic roof inserts or plugs but not the sliding rail type that you can install cross bars. I go camping 5-6 times a year and wanted to put a storage bag (not a rack or box) on the roof and lash it down to "EYE BOLTS" that would replace the M6 bolts.

Any thoughts on if this is a good or bad idea? Eye bolt and cargo bag examples attached. Thanks!

I also though about the cargo bag idea. I don't like having more weight up top when serious off-roading. So I figured a bag would be great only when I need it and it comes off easily. As far as the eye bolts go, I think they would be fine as long as you aren't putting a lot of load on them.

I appreciate the reply. For anyone that is interested, the roof rail bolts are M6 1.0 Pitch and I measured how deep they go: about 35mm thread can go into the bolt holes. So with that I'm going to try the EYE BOLT and Cargo Bag lash down. Will report back when it happens. Probably several weeks if not months.
