Has anyone here put a roof rack on a roof with no rails or hardware?

Im looking to help a guy and he doesn't have anything to work with, so I wanted to see if anyone has taken this job on.

I'd suggest spending the $2.00 or $3.00 admission to your local self serve junk yard and check out some roof racks to see how they did it.

1st gen or 2nd gen? I put a rack on a 1st gen with some bolts and silicon, drilled right through the fiberglass and didn't think twice. It'd be a little more involved with a 2nd gen, but if you didn't want to pull the headliner you could use rivnuts. Grab rails or tracks from another truck at the junkyard, or just bolt his rack straight on.

Personally, I'd tell him to get some gutter clamps and load bars and call it a day. Should be around $50-$75 for a set on your local Craigslist or whatever.

His is a 2nd Gen. Cool, thanks for the help.

I have a 3rd gen...do the 2nd Gens look close to the same, just narrower?

I have some old roof rails

Mine came off a 1995 and I cant even remember why I took them off. Dont have the 4runner anymore and have a box of parts.

So i found out the hardway the 2nd gen OEM cross bars dont fit the 3rd gen and vise versa, they are near identical designs but different lengths. if you dont want to drill ive seen a few of those amazon door clip on racks but i recommend against them, theres also a fab shop on ebay selling "sherpa stype" racks for the 2nd gen.

Do you have a link to that eBay seller by any chance?
