I just wanted to post a quick review on my experience with the WhitsonMetalworks 3/4 roof rack.
I needed a rack for my 97 Runner as the last camping trip had 4 of us, and my German Shepherd Remi, with full gear cramped inside. A decent roof rack capable of holding at least 100 pounds of camping gear was going to be needed.
I searched the forum, saw Whitson's 3/4 rack, and with the full diamond plate typo floor, extra gusset supports, and low profile, looked to suit my needs. I saw he had one built, ready to ship and we made contact for a purchase.
He was extremely quick to respond to PM's, and sent me a paypal invoice within minutes. About 4 days later(weekend caught me) the rack arrived freight in perfect condition, well wrapped with mounting hardware inlcuded.
I've picked up a few racks from Sporting goods stores,and the first thing i noticed about the Whitson rack is the solidity. You could honestly drive a small car over this thing and not bend it, no joke.
I prepped it with some very light sanding, and coated it with a LineX type coating, i wanted a textured surface for loading/unloading and this was perfect.
The mounting brackets are corner welded, and line up perfectly with the integrated roof rails, and use a cam type bolt. Mounting took 20 minutes tops, and that was with finding someone to help me lift it on the roof.
It's safe to say the roof is the weakest part of the entire system, and im more than sure this rack will support anything i'll load into there.
I've dealt with MANY online vendors, and service and quality like this should be the norm, but sadly few transactions go this smooth.
