Rooftop cargo box

When I look on Yakima's website it says the Skybox 16 fits on the 3rd gen 4runner factory roof rack. Does anyone know if that goes for older versions as well as the new ones? I've read that clearing the wind deflector on the hatch when it's open is an issue.

sorry don't know exactly if it fits or not, but clearance may well be an issue. i think you could diagram it out fairly well to see. we had an outback with which this fitment was cut to about an inch fore-to-aft, if we wanted to open the hatch the whole way.

Thanks. I've seen that same diagram. I think the distance is 48" from the rear crossbar to to deflector when it's up which makes it seem like only the newer versions would work. But surely there was a version that worked on our rigs previous to 2020.

I have the skybox and I did have issues with the rear spoiler on my 3rd gen But it is a older version that I bought for a different car. But now it goes on the 4runner in winter.
However and maybe against the "rules" I drilled new holes and moved the box forward enough to just barely clear the spoiler.. Havent put any big loads or driven at speeds over 55 so dont know if would have issues. Use it only in winter with my ski's

Just thinking out loud but what if you turned your OEM crossbars backwards, might gain a couple inches forward..

Doesn't look like it. Flipping it would only get me 2.5 more inches which would be 50.5 from the center of the crossbar to the air deflector.
