Route 66 Off Road information please.

I will be Traveling from Santa monica to Chicago on Route 66, Is there any Secret spots, off-roading, off site camping or sites that are a must see. I searched through google to come up empty handed. I have a 4th gen 4runner v8 4wd with radflo lift kit.

I am new to off-roading, but not new to High performance Driving. Any and all information is greatly appreciated. Other things that i should get before the trek? Gear that is a must?
