2003 four runner 4.7 SR5 110,000 miles. been to dealer three times (towed every time back and forth) Please anyone help...

dec it was very cold -10 driving no problem as usual, check engine light comes on...moments later car stalls. pull over restart goes 1 mile and dies for good. back and forth to dealer. they say it needs ecu, I bought salvage ecu had put in, the data LINK is having constant 12.8 volts, dealer mechanic says it should be intermittent 5 volts. nonetheless the only car we got, that we just paid off, has never run since that day in dec.

I don't know what to do.... frayed wire? some kind of connection in the one of the electric windows shorting out, mouse damage, any suggestion's I would highly appreciate.

thank you

The Data Link should be about 5v and varying as it is a communication line. If it is shorted to 12.8v there may be a short on the line and/or your replacement ECU has failed as well.

You need to figure out where the failure is in the line, at this point the technicians should be ruling out shorts in the data communication lines as well as shorts that could damage the ECU. IF your new ECU is damaged, I highly recommend that you do not put another ECU until you have determined the root cause as it will more than likely just damage the replacement as well.

thank you got more info

hi thx so much for your experitise.

I have the report from howe motors Toyota...

" no communication from ECM due to SIL network communication line shorted to voltage with key on (12 V)."

suspect key transponder or airbag controller"

"removed remainder of SIL circuit for isolation of voltage somewhere between J18 connector and DLC terminal 7.

advise customer of short to voltage in harness"

so what do you think

thx again James

Need to isolate where the short to power is, should not be that difficult for a competent tech. Or replace the harness. I would track it down myself.

obd 2 dcl 12 volts...

replace whole harness? or a specific one like the SIL (report said this) the data link connection on the obd 2 should read 5 volts is what I found . it is reading 12 and up on dlc 7. so just keep on look??? the tech said it would /could cost up to a grand.. so I cant do that. im broke with two kids.

thx

You could have them build a new section of a harness so to speak, take the pins out from the connectors on each end and run new wires. Not that difficult if you have a decent tech working on it.

data link

no go. I took the car back from dealer they are incompetent.

at home on the data link connector number 7 reads 6v but with key on it jumps to 11v. no starter no nothing. took all connections out of accessories etc all carpets etc. still nothing. it wont do anything. the lights radio work etc.

I don't see any trace of damage I wiggled and moved the harnesses no change to voltage.

what if cut the little wire from number 7 pin and run a wire right to ecu assuming the wires are the same color.

I hope this doesn't end up me scrapping this beautiful and well maintained rig.

anything else out there you can recommend. AND what the HECK is a J18 connector!!! please tell me if you know. internet bites.

it might be more helpful if you post this over in the 4th gen section, or a mod could move it over there for you...
zopperman do you mind moving this into the 4th gen section for the OP, i feel he would get the best advice there from other 4th gen guys as to where to look... or what other issues may be underlying
