Rust around weatherstripping

Wondering, is getting rust bubbles around weatherstripping common (esp. in salt states)? I've experienced it at the windshield top strip growing up into the roof, around the top of the outside and inside hatch strip, and noticed it in the roof gutter area that holds the drip weatherstrip.

In all cases it seems that over time a combination of fine dirt, debris, water, and whatever else over time gets under the strip and abrades the paint, causing rust blistering.

Other typical places are under doors and under rear hatch lower edge.

It's normal on any car that has to go through another winter in this massive POS we decided to live in(aka the rust belt).

I have only seen it on vehicles that have had a windshield replaced. When they scrape the old weather sealant/glue they often scratch into the paint. Some companies spray a primer over the area, but it only lasts so long.

funny you should mention that. we have had the windshield replaced three times over the past 10 years. a few years ago i noticed at an angle bumps in several locations along the windshield strip. i thought they were lumps of pine pitch. at some point i took a closer look, and saw that it was rust under the paint.

eventually we contacted both our insurance and went to the glass company. after some effort, we got the glass place to accept responsibility,and it was repaired at a body shop. estimated cost was $1700.

the roof and hatch were completely replaced in 2011 due to a large tree branch snapping off during an ice storm and landing on top of it. these were new oem part replacements. took about 1.5 months to get the whole job done due to delays in getting parts. that job cost insurance about $9K. in the case of these areas, i think it is mainly environmental, though not having the factory fit and finish may play a roll.

If you had the roof replaced 7 years ago I would say whoever did the work didn't do the prep and paint correctly and is a contributing factor in the rust you're seeing now, if bare metal isn't prepped correctly it will over time rust from the bare metal outwards!!

possibly, but it is only occurring from under weatherstripping. nowhere else.
