Rust on new rock slider

How common is it,or acceptable is, it to have surface rust on a brand new part that I just received? I realize theyre bare metal so that will happen over sometime but the other one is perfectly fine and this one seems to have a lot of surface rust.

My sliders shipped to me when I was on vacation, and they must have gotten rained on because they where covered in rust like that. I think I had some sand paper or steel wool I got the big stuff a little bit, then wiped it down with acetone I think and spray painted a couple coats. Has been fine for the year and a half I've had them other than where they get chipped by rocks and start rusting at those small spots. Just spray over those areas again once a year.

Yeah it’s not a huge deal I just wasn’t expecting to have to Sand surface rust off of my brand new stuff. Won’t take long just curious if that’s normal for bear middle. My C4 bumper and my other Slider doesn’t have any so just thought I’d ask

any bare steel will rust, and depending on where you are sometimes its days, sometimes its weeks, but eventually it will rust.

So to answer your question, its acceptable if you ordered steel sliders and choose not to powdercoated at the fabricator.

EIther way, its easy fix, buy some scotch pads or wire brush, and scrape it off, and paint that in whatever favorite color rustoleum you like.

Not sure how you are planning to finish them, but I would not worry. I received my C-4 sliders bare metal and it rained on them on my drive home from FedEx. As I was having them powder coated, I did not worry as I knew the shop doing the powder coating would sand blast them prior to powder coating just to make sure the coating would have a good surface to adhere against.

Bare steel will rust like that pretty quickly especially depending on humidity. Keep us updated if you touch rocks with them.

I'd say its acceptable if it is surface rust only. My C4 sliders had a slight bit of surface rust I took off with a 3m pad before I took the the powder coater.

The powder coater also acid bathed and blasted the sliders before applying the power and that got any contaminants off that I missed.

Most will say something to the effect of "shipped bare metal"

This is normal, especially for this time of year. Any item shipped bare metal, is prone to rusting. Temperature differences throughout the shipping process will create condensation on the metal that will then form a bit of rust. This rust is just simple surface rust. It can be wire-wheeled off, or it can be media blasted off. The media blasting, or sandblasting is done when someone is powder coating metal. But I suppose you could have it done just to paint them.

I don't think mine had much in the way of rust on mine, but I rubbed them down with acetone, used self etching primer, then painted them.

Next bare metal I get, I might go the POR-15 route, then paint over that.

Did the box they come in look discolored?

Looks like they got set down on a wet surface and then oxidation set in.

If it's surface, just prep them really good and spray them.

BTW, how much savings do bare steel sliders give you over coated ones these days?

I got my budbuilt skids shipped bare and they arrived perfectly, but it was snowing when I unpacked them and I let them sit for about 3 days in my garage and the humidity in the air began to build surface rust.

Happens way faster than you think and it's an easy job for the ol' wire wheel.

Don't waste money powdercoating them if you plan on using them. Rustoleum Satin Black ftw.
