Rust

Just peaked under the truck and got a little concerned. I have never experienced this before. I know 'Toyota and rust' in the same sentence isn't new, but I haven't seen it on a 2016 before. Roughly 20K miles, 1.5 old. Thoughts? Do I need to do anything to prevent more? Thanks.

You could use Fluid Film or the like and possibly rinse your undercarriage off with fresh water more often. Lots of threads on the subject with varying degrees of OCD involved for you to pick from. I'm from the south, so not the best of help.

Whatever is causing the rust is also potent enough to eat at the chrome on your shock (but it also looks almost sand blasted by road debris as the part of the mount behind the shaft is unscathed). Also, one of the pics looks like your gas tank skid with trail rash, so that exposed metal's gonna rust real quick.

I had mine treated with Krown when I bought it.

I don't have any of that. And I've been through two winters with salted roads.

I just did our Jeep and PU with Rustoleum Rust Reformer. Washed the undercarriage and let it dry then hit all the rust spots. Time will tell how it work in the long run.

I'm getting under mine with these this summer. If they don't stop it I'll look into getting it treated professionally.

Thats a lot of rust for the age of the runner. I see you live in San Fran. Been driving thru the salt? I live in Southern Rhode Island just a few miles away from the beach. Spend alot of time running and fishing the beaches around here .Own a 2014 trail that had 9 miles when purchased. No where as much rust as that. I do spend 30 min + everyday rinsing it after beach use.
Further note, if you use your buggy on the beach google saltway, It really works.

Spray the spots with a rust converter and get it undercoated. I love these trucks but they desperately need undercoating. If I ever have the means to buy a new one again I will have that done before I take delivery.

I undercoated mine with fluid film when I bought it. It will be a yearly thing for me to get under there and reapply it. I just used the spray cans of fluid film and went to town. You could cover those spots with chassis coat or por15 and then fluid film the entire vehicle before the rust completely takes over.

It seems as if all the desert roads have sandblasted the top coat off. Now with all the winter rain, the rust has set in. They don't salt the roads in CA. I will be spraying a convertor, and then a sealant.
