Live in NW PA and the road salt has finally eaten a hole in both out rocker panels. Does anyone know of a source for replacements. All I can find includes the center pillar which is more than I need or want to spend.

Help please. Just got an estimate from body shop, $1850 because they have to buy the rocker-pillar assembly and then cut the pillar off.

Fixing badly rusted rockers is going to be expensive if you do it right. If BOTH of yours are rusted through, I'd say it's pretty bad.
Depending on how big the rust area is, they can just cut the rusty metal back until they get to solid stuff and the weld a "patch" over the hole.
We'll need to see pictures of how bad this is. Right now, you pretty much just have to go on what the body shop says...they're the ones that looked at it.

Another garage just gave me an estimate for $3100. How much of a difference is there in the rocker panels between a 2nd and 3rd generation. I do not know anyone that has a 2nd gen to compare to. I found rockers for 2nd gen for $26.00. Could I modify them to make them work?

Where are you at in pa? Mine just got nailed last night and there fine, might be able to get them once the insurance is done with everything, depending one where they take it,

I worked on mine a bit last night. Overall the rust is not that bad on my rockers. From the looks of it someone got them fixed already as soon as the rust started. I have this feeling that the running boards are part of the rocker rust problem. They sit there and collect salt and dirt right where the rust areas are.
Why not buy some sheet metal and form your own? If the rust is on the bottom of them you can easily fix it with basic hand tools and some steel sheet. If you dont have a welder use some pop rivets, just remember that over time you'll get some galvanic corrosion unless you use full steel rivets.

You can get a used rocker for about 300 bucks, and probably find a set of relatively rust free from an 02. That would be the route I would go. We section used panels all the time, but expect to pay the shop extra labor to remove the pieces that you need from the used panel. We usually get 3 hours per panel, so figure 6 extra hours of labor.
1850 is actually not a bad price if they are using brand new parts. The major cost is actually in the labor. I'm not sure what your labor rate is in PA, but in VA we get 42 per hour. Figure 20 hours to section the rockers, thats 840 in labor just to cut and weld the new panels up. Add another 6 hours of paint time plus materials at 72 per hour and you've got 432 for paint and materials. That's 1272 for labor and paint, so less than 800 for the parts. If you were going with used rockers, it would work out to about the same price once you add in the additional time to remove the pieces you need from the used rocker.

Cool, I drive through there on my way to work in Franklin. My boss and I were thinking to try and do it ourselves, he has a welder and some experience. That is why I was asking about the 2nd gen rockers being close to the same, save me time trying to make them from scratch, and they may look better.
I am thinking to take the running boards off for good once I do the rockers. Any one know where I can get mud flaps for the front that will match up w/ the black fender flares I have.

The rest of the body is in to good of shape to not fix it in some way. I will however look at POR 15 to paint the new sheet metal once I do the repair.
zgensler31 If the insurance totals yours and you are interested in another 3rd gen, there is a small dealer in front of the refinery in Warren that always has a few. I was up that way a couple weeks ago and he had 3 if I remember correctly.

Here's the part #'s. I just called up my local Yota dealer (disclaimer: they are part of our dealer group) and gave them the part #'s. They were in stock at the local warehouse and I had them the next day.

I know this is an old post but on my 1998 4Runner we ordered rocker panels from a Tacoma and they worked fine.

Adding on for others who have this issue and may research....
I have really bad rust on my rocker panels.
I took an angle grinder, added a metal cutting blade and cut away all the rusted areas. Its still sitting in the garage awaiting the next phase, but I planned on cutting out equal amouts on both sides, then adding some type of metal piping in there. I will cut as much as i need to insure the pipe butts up with the top and bottom edges of the gap/hole, then weld it up.
I plan on doing a tan rhino line to the entire rig then adding rock sliders afterwords. May even slather a bunch of truck bed liner in side to help stop or at least slow down any further rusting.
