Rusty Hi-lift

Hey guys,


Picked up a used hi-lift and am going to remove the rust and repaint. Would you guys recommend using naval jelly then rubbing if off with a steel brush. Then repainting using rustoleum out door paint?

Not sure about what to repaint with, but I highly recommend evapo-rust, no caustic or acidic chemicals, safe and can be poured down the sink after. Just soak the rusty part in the solution and it pulls off the rust. I get mine from O'Reilly's autoparts, it's not very expensive.

I will note that it leaves a light polymer layer behind, supposedly this side effect can help prevent corrosion, but wears off easy. You will have to experiment if you can paint over this or if it needs to be removed.

I looked it up and it appears that you can spray self etch right over the evapo-rust layer.

Used naval jelly and it got rid of the rusty just turned into flakes... this stuff is amazing! Going to just use rustoleum outdoor one as this hilift bound to get scratches all the time. Currently rebuilding the entire mechanism.

I would disassemble, wire wheel all parts, de-grease, prime then paint.

that's hardly what I'd call rusty..I've had mine for 15 years, it's constantly getting beat up, so I just keep the climbing and cross pins lubed real good with wd40 and call it a day..now if it's going on your rig for show, by all means strip it down and paint, but if you're wheeling with it and plan to use it, I wouldn't waste my time.

Yup did just this. Purchasing the fix it kit to replace the internals as well as the shear bolt...which is bent!

I total agree theyll last forever but I bought this used and didnt know what it been through and the internals although cant be seen was completely rusted. Naval jelly worked wonders and made the rust disappear if you ever decide to repaint, etc.

Sandblast, wire wheel on bench grinder, chemical such as naval jelly which does not seem to work as well as it use to. coat with aerosol or brush rust converter type paint. Keep coated with aerosol can paint periodically.
