Joined some local off-roaders for a trip to a sand pit not too far from town. Mostly purpose built off-road rigs. The modded rubicons & other jeeps blew my mind! It is part machine capability and a heafty dose of driver ability BUT I had no idea how much of that "drivers ability" is plain old knowing limits and having absolutely no fear.
I've driven in many conditions, but never sand. It is different. I failed a hill climb miserably on the first try before I even started getting a *clue*. Tires with big lugs didn't seem that great either.
I'm now officially a fan of HDC. Starting is still difficult, but once you are on the slope and HDC is running the show it functions nicely. What I need to figure out is a way to avoid that initial lurch as you "get" on the slope as HDC kicks in.
I will add a couple pics later, for now, a short vid of me stuck like crazy. I had tried to pull out the orange rubi. It almost was a go, but I didn't get off the gas quick enough and sank. That was that. Then the white rubi tried to tug both of us. No deal. So we undid the orange (with the strap under tension we were extremely cautious). The white rubi still couldn't help me, so we attached a old tank-like CJ to it. Finally freedom. $10 car-wash clams later my wheels are still wobbling like crazy.

I also got high centered, but that was an easy pull. There were some very positive comments to the 4Runners ability. In nearly the same place were I was stuck, a compact pickup needed a pull...but couldn't even turn one wheel! Not sure why?
