SAS and IFS

For the mechanically uneducated, what are SAS and IFS, and what is the difference between them?

Correct me if I'm wrong but i believe SAS is Solid Axle Suspension and IFS is Independent Front suspension

Ill let somebody else go into detail about the differences and benefits but i believe SAS are easier to lift

SAS or solid axle swap, synonymous with SAC or solid axle conversion is the conversion of independent front suspension to a solid axle. Meant for the extreme rock crawlers, usually takes away from road handling. It takes a lot of money, fabrication, and time.

Like he said, people throw the term around to indicate the swap. I "Solid Axle Swapped" my 1987 4runner, which originally had "Independent Front Suspension" (IFS). Rarely I'll see people abbreviate SFA to indicate they have a solid front axle, usually when it was stock.

These 4runners had solid front axles through 1985, and had independent front suspension forever after. So people with 86 and newer models may indicate they want to "SAS it" to get super rock crawl mode.
