SAS swap question

I made sure to give the driver drop waggy years, and spaced the FJ being passenger *♂️ Really only one, cause the mini axle shouldn't even be considered under a 3rd gen!
That said, the A340 with a passenger drop was put behind the 3.4 in the T100. If he's doing a solid axle, what's a trans swap while you're at it?
To be honest, the IFS has more clearance than a solid axle, and flexes pretty decent with the FSB disconnected. Why do you want to do a solid axle for a woods rig? Due to the frame on our rigs, it's also fairly challenging to keep it reasonably low- especially on leafs.

Ya, and I pointed out that the FIRST two were the wrong side so he'd know. No biggie.

As for the mini-axle....it *could* be considered, if one widened the axle housing and went custom shafts from RCV like I'm doing with the FJ80 front end I'm going to run.....and one wanted passenger drop b/c of their tcase choice. But why even mention it if it's something that neither fits, nor is wide enough (without a lot of work)?

With all the Ultra 4 guys going IFS, I have to ask ... why SAS? Toyota front ends are ridiculously stout and capable ... why make the truck slower, and arguably less capable?

Honest question ...

Define what "capable" means to you for me.

ca·pa·ble
ˈkāpəb(ə)l/
adjective
adjective: capable

1.
having the ability, fitness, or quality necessary to do or achieve a specified thing.

Stock framed 4Runners, even with long arm kits, don't hold a candle to a comparatively priced SFA in terms of rockcrawling. If the SFA can do essentially everything and go everywhere the IFS can, but it can also complete obstacles that the IFS cannot without either breaking or rolling over, which is really more capable?

Ultra 4 rigs are so far beyond the pale of what a stock framed T4R can accomplish even with long travel a-arms as to make that comparison nonsensical.

There is really no comparison between a stock IFS and what those guys run. Look at Dirtco's thread and the axle issues he has had. Total Chaos IFS parts are off the chart expensive. And although IFS can out perform a SA in the fast stuff, Rock crawling is a different game.

Personally I don't like Driver's drop conversions, just no room in there and you have to use a D44. But in a pinch, and I've been there, they can and do work!

I'd prefer driver drop for a lot of reasons....on the 3rd Gen....mostly b/c the a/c compressor hangs so low on the passenger side. That, and I think they're easier to drive since you know exactly where the diff is.

But, if you want the car to sit really low.....pass drop makes more sense as you can run the tcase (not the Toyota ones, but Atlas or Heroes) under the pass side seat and just angle the seat back more.

My friend is very capable of doing the swap with me. He's more mechanically inclined with lift and tools. With that said, I simply just wanted to know which axle people usually go with. Seems like a chevy is the best choice.

I hope this same friend isn't the one suggesting a Chevy front axle, which happens to have a passenger drop.

You need a driver's drop front axle. Time for more research!

Well that is something I hadn't considered, mostly because I haven't done a 3rd gen SAS. But unless you make a custom housing, you still have to go Dana!

What do you mean by angle the seat back more?

Sorry....should've been more clear. When I said "car" I meant chassis. I build full tube chassis....and that's a consideration in those vehicles, not a 3rd Gen.

I can basically angle the passenger seat back like they are about to be launched into space if I have to to give them head to cage clearance and still maintain a very low CoG in the vehicle by tucking the drivetrain under their seat. Can't do that to the driver side without giving up some serious visibility.

I'm doing a somewhat "custom" housing on my 3rd Gen....but it doesn't have to be Dana (mine's an FJ80 widened 4")...but I'm also swapping in dual Marlins with the gear driven, pass drop tcases.

My 2002 SAS...
