Yeah I don't usually advertise it much, but I don't have any 06-09s in the queue right now (and I'm still too scared to cut my '03 grille) so I figured I'd make the offer.

No, and I think I've irked a couple 03-05 guys but I think it's going to be a lot of work and I'm not sure I'll be able to offer that amount of work at a reasonable price.

I still have a list of people who have contacted me about it that I plan to contact if I ever do.... and your name is still on that list :nerd:

I think this is one of the coolest mods I've seen on 4th gens. I really like what a couple of members here have done with this. Looks awesome.
 
Hope my name is on that list too... we emailed back in Feb, and I've still got a spare grille sitting around if you want to practice...

Not to be a wise guy, but what work is so involved? Is it just tedious to get the mesh all lined up and such or is there tons of cutting, etc?
 
All depends on if you're insetting the mesh and what you want the final product to look like. Can be done quickly but once you get into fiberglassing and finish work it takes a bit more time.

If you want to send that spare grille I suppose I could give it a go... But I should really just cut this one I have up in case it doesn't turn out good.

The tedious work is :
  • smooth out nubs from factory slats
  • lay fiberglass over holes
  • lay bondo over fiberglass
  • sand
  • lay more bondo
  • sand
  • more bondo
  • sand
  • primer
  • sand
  • primer
  • sand
  • paint
  • sand?
  • paint
  • clear
  • then sometimes I need to sand and paint/clear again
Some steps also have varying dry times from 'hurry and get it done before it dries' to 'well I'm done with this until tomorrow'

The mesh is actually one of the easiest parts. When doing this for yourself it's less tedious and you can deal with imperfections. But I'm building a grille for someone else, I can't just cut corners where I choose because that corner may be VERY important to the buyer. So all those repeated steps I perform result in a smooth almost OEM looking product.

[MENTION=67365]Whitebeauty[/MENTION], [MENTION=72004]deedst4r[/MENTION], [MENTION=91278]Turd Sandwich[/MENTION], and at least 4 other members who I can't think of at this time can vouch for how clean the cuts and added material blend with what was already there on the grilles I've built for them, i.e. no pits, bumps, strange curves, or rough edges. That can't be if I'm not meticulous with the sanding, bondo, and paint, which is tedious.

Understood, didn't intend to insult or anything, just curious. I never would have imagined that much work to be honest. I thought it was a simple as attaching some metal mesh onto the original grill. Nothing is ever as simple as it appears.

No offense taken. It can be basically that simple if you're building it for yourself and think it looks ok.
