scangauge vs atf temp gauge

I received my trans cooler in the mail and before install I'm considering what to check the temps with.
The only advantage I can see is being able to check more then just atf , but that's a big price difference for something I might not use.
I have access to a scan tool if I want to check/clear codes.
I don't mind spending the money if its justified but that's $120+ I could put towards other parts like the lift I'm saving up for.

Throw me some input.

96-98 get a dedicated trans temp gauge
99-=02 get a scangauge

Its a 2000. I wouldn't post this if I had 98 or older.

I use my scan gauge everyday to monitor my trans temps. I set it up as one of my gauges that is always showing. Well worth the money for the scan gauge if you ask me.

What to use if I can't use Scanguage??

I just installed a B&M 70268 in my 96 4Runner. I am told that a scanguage will not tell me my ATF temp in a '96. Are there any other options that I may use to monitor my trans temp?

It is my understanding that the computer on that year does not report tranny temps, but you should be able to adapt a conventional guage to work.

Where would you install the sensor to monitor tranny temps? I picked up a black aluminum disc that fits under the oil filter with threaded holes in it to install oil temp and oil pressure sensors on Amazon but I don't see any way to install a tranny temp gauge sensor anywhere.

I haven't done it, but I believe guys have been putting a sensor inline with the tranny return hose. Maybe The Kid will chime in, I know he has done it and I've looked at his setup in person.

Correct, you run a sensor in the tranny line, most do the line leaving so you can see the temp before its cooled, then install a dedicated gauge to it. I plan in doing this since an Ultra gauge wont read the tranny temp.

Exacty correct. Simply cut the line to the cooler, from the Trans and install a t fitting with your gauge.

I find the my gauge and my scan gauge are quite different from eachother... Considering how accurate my other 2 AEM gauges are, I find it hard to believe my AEM Trans temp gauge is inaccurate.
