SCRunner's Build Thread

I haven't seen your build for a while! Looks awesome with the classic ARB! Love the pics of snowy Yosemite - looks like you have a beautiful family. I've yet to explore any of the CA wilderness - I want to try that sometime. Keep it up, the adventures with your loved ones are the best!

EDIT: looked another page or so back... congrats on your marriage!! Like BFAD said, putting each other first takes care of so many other things. Wishing you all the best, good to see! :)

As shown above I finally got the bumper up from bricebones and installed. Giant thanks to Konkordmusk and his co-worker Don. Caleb not only picked the bumper up for me, but also invited me to his work so I could use the fork lifts and welder while there. As you can see in the picture above, I had quite a bit of mud built up in my bumper and frame that rained down on us when we were removing it. After that it really was quick to install the bumper as the forklift did all the heavy lifting.

I was going to install some OME 861's when I put the bumper on, but decided to wait as I didn't want it to be too tall. Right now I'm at about 23.5" in the back and 23" up front. I'm going to be bumping my front up a bit more soon when I install my 650lb springs, so I don't want to be bro leaning. Might just install a couple 10mm OME spacers to see how it brings up the back. I'm happy with the superflex, but I'd like a bit more height out of the back when unloaded.

I also worked on a skid plate I had bought off Vin (@scsperformance). He had bought the skid a long time ago and it never fit his Tacoma as it was about 2" too short in the front. Not sure if it was bent wrong or what, but he gave me a good deal and I figured why not. I ended up getting a 2' section of some 2x2 square tubing and had Caleb weld it to the skid and cut some openings in the front to access the bolts. Pretty goofy, but it works and I have very little into this skid so fine by me.

Mocked up and 2" short.

Caleb doing his work!

Installed

We were supposed to go to Slick Rock, but it was supposed to rain and we didn't want to risk it. Instead we went to Hollister for a shake down run with the new stuff. We had a blast and was able to take my nephew out for his first wheeling trip. Caleb's friend has all the pictures of my 4runner so I will upload those when I receive them.

More Hollister fun!

Tire is at such a big angle. Any way to make it more vertical to get it closer to the hatch?

Yeah after looking into it more I found the swing arm had bent with the PO. This seems like a fairly common incident with CBI, but I can't complain for the price I bought it for. I will be removing the arm this weekend and trying to straighten it out with a BFH or possibly my press if it will fit.

You can see the bent portion at the bottom and angle its at.

Tire carrier is bent.

Bends at the top and bottom.

Stress cracks in the powdercoat.

It should be fairly easy to fix, but I will be looking into reinforcing it at some point.

In other updates, I have begun tearing the front apart. I will be rebuilding my calipers, new pads and rotors, stainless brake lines, swapping to 14x650lb coils, swapping in my OEM CV's, OME 10 mm spacers in the rear, Fox 2.0's and if I have time rear brakes and brake line. I will be heading up to Tahoe for a week leaving next Friday and want to get everything all ready for the trip. Pics to come.

Well I got home today and the kid was at my brothers and the wife was taking a nap so lucky me, I got to work on my truck. I had removed the calipers and rotors last night, so I pulled the manual hubs, and coilovers today. Decided I should swap the springs with the rented spring compressors, luckily they were brand new when I rented them. Easy enough to remove the springs, but still scares me every time.

All back together with the new to me Fox 2.0's (23.5" extended and 16.5" compressed)

To do list:
Rebuild Calipers
Rebuild and install CV's
Springs Done
Rear Shocks 1/2 Done
Rear Spacers
Rear Brakes

Really hoping to have that all done by the end of the weekend so I can fine tune anything before my trip.

Well I got most of what I wanted to get done.
To do list:
Rebuild Calipers Done
Rebuild and install CV's 1 replaced
Springs Done
Rear Shocks Done
Rear Spacers Done
Rear Brakes For a later date

Finally got everything all buttoned up last night and took it for a test drive. The brakes need to be bled again, but they work great. I gained another 1/2" in the back using the OME 10mm spacers which will be nice when I load up for my trip.

I don't have compressed air so I had a shop remove the pistons. They ended up unbolting the calipers.

Unfortunately, my front is way too low. When I installed it was around 24.5-25" hub to fender, but after my test drive it dropped all the way to 22". Sitting at about 1" of lift so back I go again tonight. My wife hates me at this point btw.

In other news, I made another purchase because the price was way too good. Ended up picking up a brand new set of Savage Off Road IFS skid plates. It's the front two skids and got them for $175. I had the Metal Miller skid, but it needed some more tweaking and didn't cover the steering rack. Plus this will allow me to purchase the belly pan Savage skids as well down the line.

It's going to a big update. It's been a while since I updated this thread and I've made a few small changes, but it pretty much remains as before. This summer was a lot of fun, but it also flew by and the wheeling opportunities weren't available as much as I'd like. I was able to make it to Eagle Lakes by Tahoe with the TW crew. Had a blast, but got some damage to the new wheels. Ended up leaving with a sliced valve stem and 3 scratched wheels, not bad. Oh and installed my Savage skids at the campsite before the trail, just keeping it classy.

Didn't get many pictures since I was driving the whole time and suck at remembering to take pics. Had a blast though.

The next day I took a short trail with the family to an overlook above Lake Tahoe. Would have been very peaceful if my wife wasn't yelling at me that we were about to fall off the trail haha.

After the trip I got to painting my skid. Decided to get a little fancy with a TRD sticker I had laying around. Turned out pretty good IMO.

Other than that I've just been driving it. That leads me to my big update. I finally did a V8 and Tundra brakes upgrade. It's been something I've wanted to do for a long time, but somehow came in the form of a truck...weird haha.

I finally found the perfect truck and pulled the trigger. This has been an afterthought for a long time, but lately with only going on one wheeling trip all summer and having to tinker with the 4runner contantly, I decided it was time to let her go. There were a ton of other factors that persuaded me as well, we are hoping to have our second kid and the 4r is too small for 2 and looking to buy a house this spring, so cash will be tight after that. I just want something I can drive to work or the mountains and everyone can be comfortable. The Tundra fit the bill at a reasonable price and allowed me to have a truck in the family. No more searching for someone to borrow from.

I ended up finding it on Autotrader (who uses that anymore) and it was 6 hours from home. Got on a bus that night at 12 and took a 13 hour bus ride to meet the guy. It was nerve racking in case I didn't like it, but I felt confident about this one. It ended up turning out to be perfect in every way and the guy was one of the easiest people to work with. Spent 30 min total with the PO and was on my way. Easiest transaction I've ever done and the only non informed issue was a torn CV, which is a $20 and 1 hour fix.

So the specs, 06 double cab limited Tundra, V8, TRD, 133k, ARE camper, Method Mesh wheels, 285 Nitto Terra Grapplers, 5100's up front, full leather, moon roof, rolling down rear window, DVD system, new headlights, TB done 9k ago, tires/wheels/lift done 4k ago and up to date maintenance. The thing was babied and in amazing shape.

My future mod list:
255/80/17 Cooper ST Maxx
SCS wheels (TBD)
Projector retrofit (D2S)
Possible Softtopper
BAMF Sliders
LED bed lighting
Rear 5100's

Going to keep it very modest and might add some UCA's, but feel no need as of now. As for the 4runner, it will be sold soon. Going to sell the SC kit seperate, but otherwise I'll keep it intact unless I can't find a buyer. Not going to part anything else out at this time. SC kit here (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/sale-...jector-kit-capitola-ca-$3800.html#post2125043)

I'll still be active on this board and create a build for the Tundra, which I named Moby. It's the first thing I thought of when I saw it and was my nickname for my wife when she was pregnant with my daughter (she hates me for that haha). I can't say enough about this forum and how awesome it is. The Tundra forums are pretty lonesome, so I'll be bothering you guys for sure.

I am not sure how to feel about this.. Double Cab Limited 1st gen tundras are my secret love.

Cool updates though!

Yep, those trucks are right sized to me. I have a 2000 4WD access cab for a work truck. If I were getting one for myself it would be a '96, maybe '95.

Real nice truck SCRunner12.

Well, I can definitely say that I did see this one coming. You've been making posts alluding to this course of action for at least a year.

I'm happy for you that you found the right truck. Clean, well optioned, well cared for Tundras are hard to come by, especially at a decent price. "Moby" looks like an awesome example, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I'm always bummed when a forum regular decides to sell their 4Runner, but it's good to hear that you'll still be hanging around and posting about the new Tundra.

Time to put a comfy sleeping setup in the bed of the truck, take the Mrs. up to a nice, romantic spot in the mountains/beach, and get started on that second kid thing.

Haha I wasn't sure either till I actually drove a Tundra a few months ago. Since then I have fallen in love. I've had my fun with the 4runner and it will be missed, but it's time for me to move on. I plan on getting a 1st gen 4runner after we buy a house and have more room, so I won't be gone forever. That has always been my dream and have a Tundra to pull it.

It feels huge compared to the 4runner, but I'm getting used to it. Definitely have to pick my parking spots more, but it's worth it. Plus I get the driveway spot now. :becky:

I figured you'd catch onto all my hints these past months. Wasn't a reality until we postponed looking for a place for a year. Then I really started to push the idea, but surprisingly my wife was on board.

I've looked at so many Tundras on craigslist and it is tough to find a nice one in a reasonable price range. I didn't get a deal by any means (14.5k), but I don't feel I overpaid. The same exact truck (lift, tires, wheels, options, mileage) but without a shell just sold in 1 day locally for 16.5k, so that makes me feel good about my buy.

I plan on hanging around and answering questions and keeping up with the builds. My job is too boring for me not to log on. Need to find some time to clean up that SC thread, it's just pitiful.

My daughter already made plans to bring the truck on her end of the school year camping trip so we can sleep in the back. Hopefully we have a second one to snuggle down with by then.

BTW, two days of ownership and a set of 255 Cooper ST Maxx's are on their way. I will be matching these with the new 17" SCS F-5's, color to be determined. This won't happen for a few weeks as I will heading to Montana next week to see my dad's new property. We can't wait and should be a fun trip with the family.

Never concluded my build thread but as I'm sure most of you know I sold my 4runner to 4Runner010. He wasn't a member yet but has since joined and created his own twist on my old truck. So happy it went to a good home.

I'm still driving the Tundra and absolutely love it. It's been the perfect vehicle for my family and a blast to drive each day (besides the mpg haha). Sadly though it is my pavement princess and I haven't seen a trail in close to a year. Been really getting the itch again and especially since my daughter (6) has been asking to go wheeling. So a stroke of dumb luck and some elbow grease and I have this to play with...

It's current state after getting it from the body shop.

It's a 1999 IJM Highlander edition, AT, 190k, 4wd and supercharged...but the supercharger is claimed by a friend who split the vehicle with me. I bought it off a TW member who totaled it and didn't have the space or time to repair. A friend bought the SC and I got the rest of the truck for $800. It's all superficial damage (besides the hatch, grill and front bumper). The drivetrain is perfect and no frame damage from what I can tell. Already getting some SR5 flares coming since they were removed and working on a grille now. Also have a line on a hatch. Best thing is it has a brand new radiator (no milkshake for me) and timing belt/water pump was done 8k ago.

I plan on rebuilding to stock first then determining what plan for the rest. My wife might actually use it as her daily so we can sell her Jeep. Then in 6 months or so her mom is giving her a Lexus RX350 and the 4runner will be mine again. This is all dependent she feels comfortable driving it once it's back together. I'll be creating a new build to focus on the new runner. Glad to be back in a 4runner again!

All your trucks look awesome. I want to upgrade from my 05 forester. Do any of you guys buy from a dealer if they don't have maintenance records?
