Seat covers & dogs - long term thoughts

I’ve read the threads that came up in a search and the following pop out to me:

• everyone seems happy with Wet Okles
• Wet Okles will be hot which is a problem cause i live in New Orleans
• short dog hair will stick to them which is a problem for me cause a short furred dog is the reason i want covers

So my question to folks who have NOT invested in seat covers and have a dog that likes to climb over everything (40#), do you regret not getting covers? He love to stand on the folded down back seat and drill on my center console after a run so I’ll probably get this at a minimum:

i had softex and chose to not get seat covers for my 3 dogs (all of which have short fur). it was just easier to clean up than attempting to clean seatcovers (which i had in my Tacoma).

that console cover isn't a bad idea, though.

Over time do you think the dogs contributed to significantly more wear and tear?

I'm looking into covers for the front so I'm also looking for recommendations. I do have the neoprene console cover because my dogs like to stand and step on the center console so I wanted some protection. For the back where I plan to keep the dogs when we travel, I bought a full canvas back set for the backs of the seats as well as extra flaps for the headrests and bumpers.

Here's the neoprene cover on the armrest, it also helps keep the vinyl from getting too hot and burning my arm when I get in the car and put my arm on it. It fits great, it's just a little harder to close the latch

I did a one day shipment for back seat cover for a Colorado trip last week... That cover also went up to the back of the front seat (like a taco), also came with seat belt latch adjustable leash to somewhat keep my Choc Lab from jumping around. He was able to unlatch that twice and the cover had a zipper that zipped up behind the arm rest and he tore that too. That cover collected so much hair. In Colorado I folded that POS thing away, vacuum the truck and went and bought a crate at Walmart.. That worked the best for my situation.
I also thought about a backseat Net/Barrier to keep him back there. Raingler.com

I have some black Wet Okoles and live in central Florida. I honestly haven't noticed that they get any hotter than any other cloth/cloth-like seats. In fact, I'd say they stay cooler than the tan leather seats in my wife's Highlander.

I don't do anything special for my dog though - she either sits in the seats or hangs out in the back. It's pretty easy to clean the dog hair off the seats. I've found just brushing it off with my hands is the most effective way. Lint rollers and vacuums require more effort than just brushing it off by hand.

Here's what I did for the back. We happened to have one of these at the house. So I bought webbing to secure the rear straps to the rear anchor points. Toyota rear mat closes the gap back to the tail gate.

I personally prefer the dog hammocks for the second row if that’s where they are sitting. Kind of keeps them out of the front, protects the seats and have seatbelt holes that you can use if you want to safely restrain the dog in the second row. I also have the door guards, which I don’t use for the dog anymore but they work great for my kids.

For most of the past 4 years I had nothing, I have a dog hammock that gets used <50% of the time now and it was not for ease of cleaning but more for safety to keep him in the back seat during panic stops etc.

Softex has held up wonderful and is easy to clean, the downside is of course the rest of the carpet (seat backs, floor , etc.) does not clean as well

I have a simple Kurgo cover and it works great. I recently had an issue with a Kurgo harness and learned that hey have a lifetime warranty on all their products I was able to order a new harness simply by submitting pics to their online site. It could not have been easier- so that helps me know when the car seat is thrashed I will return it with zero hassle.

My solution for fur was to buy a Goldendoodle, and I will probably never again buy a dog that sheds (unless I get back into duck hunting and want/need a lab. My doodle is a great retriever, with a good nose, but he isn't "waterproof" like labs are.)

For dirty/muddy/sandy/wet fur (he loves to roll after getting wet...) I use a middle seat hammock from Amazon.

This one is cheap, but seems to be holding up and has some nice features. The straps are well stitched, with reinforcement. The side flaps can fold up to protect the doors or fold down to protect the side of the seat when the dog jumps in. There are little pvc pieces that go down behind the seat to hold it in place. If I get a year out of it I'll be happy.

If you want a seat cover and have short hair dogs, faux leather, something the short rigid hair won't interweave into is your best bet.

Roger. Anyone have experience with faux leather covers? It’s startong to sound as if I should just use what I have and IF it gets wrecked, reupholster.

I use a hammock style cover for the rear seat. works pretty well at capturing dirt and hair. Just unclip it, fold it and slide it out.
