How many of our fellow members installed an alarm on their 4Runners? I did not because I felt the engine immobiliser option that is standard in the 4th Gen would provide sufficient protection against theft. Am mis-informed?

I added the viper 5000 alarm back in september. The pager feature of the alarm is great. But because i also added a nav system and rims I added extra sensors to the alarm. The shock sensor is adjustable from the remote which I love. The tilt sensor helps if you have rims. If the angle of the car changes 1 degree it sounds the alarm. this prevents the stealing of your rims and on the instance your vehicle is being towed the alarm will also sound. Backup batteries work wonders for those crafty enough to try to cut the battery cables to disable the alarm. And on the instance a thief gains entry to the cabin I installed a high decibel piezo siren. From watching the local news it appears that theft is on the rise in san antonio and being new here I am taking every precaution imaginable but i know that if they want it they will take it regardless of the steps one takes to prevent theft.

All 4th generation 4Runner's come standard with an engine immobilizer. My truck came with the Toyota security system, but it is anything but secure. The only thing that will make the alarm go off is if a door is opened or a window broken. I can shake my 4Runner, stand on the running boards, or basically do anything to it and the alarm will not go off.

I have factory remotes but they don't do anything. There are aftermarket ones too. The alarm on mie is super sensitive. If a cat jumps on it, it does the warning chirps. If the alarm goes off it actually holds the door locks down too.

I have the factory alarm and pretty satisfied with it for now.

where did u get the cabin siren?...ive been lookin for one...but havent found one at any stores around me...the only issue i can think of is the button to disable the alarm in the event that u lose the remote is inside the car...and what about your tilt sensors...arent alarms designed so that when the city tows your car...they reach a certain angle and the alarm shuts off...so the tow truck isnt drivin around with the alarm goin off...

If a thief wants something out of your car or wants the entire car bad enough, there is nothing that can stop him. Period.

Car alarms are worthless junk, IMO.

Unless you have the club! Now there's an infomercial invention...

just got mine in...

I just got Viper 5900 installed on mine last Sunday. But i'm not really satisfied with the installation so i'm taking it back to get it fixed. First i dun like the siren, it sounds like a cheap alarm with bird chirping. Then they did not have the shock sensor sensitivity any high. I can bang the whole truck upside down and it won't go off. The biggest issue i have and i spent all my money on "The Best Alarm Out There" was the 1-mile range. But its not holding even in a 1/4 mile range. I park at university parking which is big but no buildings, and still it don't hold till my building.

So after i discuss and get these issues fixed, i'm keeping my fingers cross. Coz i love the system, i just want it to work right, ALL the way.

Finally...

I finally got my Shock Sensor's sensitivity where i wanted it to be, HIGH. Plus i got an additional siren on the outside and a Pizo Siren for the cabin, and let me tell you, it's LOUD. I tried sitting in the seat and make the siren go off, I couldn't bare 10 seconds. I'm happy with the system now. I will be putting more sensors in it down the line.

This Sunday, i'm getting a module put in with which i can retract the Back Window from my pager can't wait.

Viper 5900 is the best out there so far. :bigok:

thnx. yeah i did. Actually only Viper 5000 has that feature. the 5900 don't have the sensitivity control in the pager, soooo. But anyway, i'm happy with it now. My sensitivity is HIGH and i got two extra sirens including a PIZO Cabin Siren, so i'm pretty much all set. :-D

I have full coverage on my vehicles - why bother with alarms

If they are stolen - I will get a new truck :biggrin2:

Let the insurance company worry about it, I pay enough for the coverage.

Yeah you right, if you have full coverage you don't have to worry. But for those of us who have older models and No Full Coverage, we would like to have something for a little peace of mind. Plus, its nice to have an alarm system w/Remote Start. And those A**H***s who keep checking around my truck at night run off whenever the alarm goes off. I haven't had a problem since i had the alarm.
