Seeking help with Google maps

Planning a road trip ...

Can anyone tell me how to force GM to keep the route I draw, rather than to redraw the route back to its "best path", "shortest path" tendencies?

I'm trying to get some routes drawn, off the interstate, through some parks, but every now and then it simply won't allow it. It reverts back to the interstate, or a route it thinks is faster or shorter.

Pissin' me off!

you should be able to set a bunch of consecutive destinations, instead of simply setting a final destination, which will give you the shortest route.

I'm not doing that.... and I don't want the shortest route necessarily.

I'm dragging the destination pointer along the route I WANT TO TAKE, but GM sometimes redraws it to it's choice.

Don't drag the pointer, set the 1st destination, wait for gmaps to calculate route; then click the + button, and that allows you to enter the 2nd destination, etc.

Verified on Windows 7.

I know how to do that, but it's a helluva lot of effort to type in 15 little towns off the beaten path.

I was hoping there was a "manual" routing technique. Sigh.

Ha! Oh I got maps brother .. I love maps. My wife thinks I'm map-weird. Yesterday, in Sheridan WY, I bought a WY map, and had most of the cockpit covered ... she got out for a walk.
 
I think what you are looking for is "add a stop" not "destination"

With a couple of well placed stops along the line you draw, it will probably hold that path.

Also Bing Maps will hold lines. Not sure what you are doing but I draw Bing maps all the time. and simply drag the path it takes to the new direction I want.

I use Bing on the PC and Google on the phone. On the phone though, I just let it go where it wants or "add stops"

Thanks, I'll have to try Bing maps ... never have.

I'm on a road trip, Illinois to Portland, and I like to get off the main roads to sightsee. After Portland I want to head North ending up at Banff, and then back home -- route TBD. As I said in my OP, Google maps just doesn't always want to stay where I draw it.

I've got my (WIN) laptop with me and I prefer it to my phone.
 
Ok, well I do that on a small scale with Google Maps every day. But it's more on a Citywide basis.

So here is what I will do.

Enter address A. I want to go there most efficiently.

Once I get there I might enter say six more somewhat nearby addresses lets say within 3 miles. So I enter them, slide them into order of A, B, C, D, E, F for the most logical path.

Now let's say after C something comes up and I want to go eat, or see someone or whatever and I simply know how to get there or how I want to get there. I do that. Once I am finished with that, no matter where I am, it will now recalculate to get me to D.

The only downside is it keeps talking to me telling me how to get to D, but you can turn the volume off.

I am going to very specific places. You could probably do that much easier simply by picking a place lie a large intersection near where your side trip run is.

Also just to be clear... I print my Bing maps so that may not apply for you. but the above live, in my truck, Google navigation.

I have not figured if this possible but there is a good chance you can simply say "Take me to X" or "Add a stop at X".

I go back into the menu to add a stop by typing or like I say, just go off course and know that when I am actually ready to resume I simply need to start doing what the voice says again.

I've never read the directions but it seems pretty smart and I would almost bet you can talk to it to get it to alter the route for you. I am constantly surprised at how well it does work.
 
If you use Google Earth it would be much easier, at least on a laptop or desktop.

If you google "google earth pro free" a link to cnet will let you get the Pro version for free.

Are you trying to use the app or the website? I have a google pixel and I have a tab on my app thats called "your places". To use it you need to have a gmail account. Basically you can create whatever kind of route you want on google maps through the website, (including bike trails and off highway routes) and save it to your profile. Then when you use the app on your phone you can pull up your route on my places and itll route according to the route you set. Its kind of complicated if youve never used it before but works great.

I was doing this earlier today, OP, for a trip plan to Colorado. Was working fine. My thought would be to make sure the point you are dragging is actually snapping or falling on an actual road, and not just getting it close. Also if you start to add a bunch of custom route points, it can be a mess real quick and may not alow certain routes due to geometry/drawing constrictions you can't see.

-Zoom in.
-Be careful on what point you are grabbing to move.

Could also be a bug... clear browser cache, etc.
