Seized driveshaft flange

Looking for some ideas/help. This isn't on my 4runner but rather for my 89 mr2 (forum support over there is abysmal). I'm trying to drop the transmission to replace the clutch, and the driveshaft flange is seized to the transmission output flange. I tried smacking on it with a rubber mallet to get it to come loose with no luck. I don't want to wail on it too hard and mess something up, if that's possible? A friend suggested removing the driveshaft from the hub to give me more flexibility to pull on the joint. I'm also concerned about pulling too hard?

Any suggestions for how to proceed? Should I just wack it until it comes loose? Is pulling a better option? Heat? On the 4Runner the actual joint flange is much more obvious so I'm able to pry it apart, but I haven't really noticed a clear joint/flange on these to give that a try.

Pictures are what the joint looks like. Service manual doesn't show any sort of weird clips and just shows pushing the two flanges apart.

Maybe try a bigger rubber or dead blow hammer or a block of wood and a sledge hammer. Good luck!

Somebody may have used RTV instead of the cork gasket - if so, you'll have to get it apart kinda like an oil pan to block interface.

You can also just pop the whole axle out of the trans... It is held in with a c-clip just like 4Runner front axles. A clutch fork works really well for that if you have one laying around.

I'm confused....what's stuck? Your photo looks like you removed the shaft just like in the manual, or was that some kind of generic pictures from the net?

Are these parts aluminum or steel? Also....are they mating surfaces that have to hold in oil/grease? Definitely take it easy so you don't deform/scratch up anything that's gotta maintain a seal.
