I recently bought an auction 2000 Toyota 4runner with 164k miles wrecked in the front and roof (rollover) the carfax is immaculate and the motor shows it no oil leaks anywhere but it wont turn over??? When I try to crank the motor it makes a loud bang type noise like its hitting something but theres nothing for it to hit leaving me thinking its internal. I have checked the oil pan and timing belt all are good and belt are good. The car was hit on the front drivers side all the fuses are good under the hood but I need this motor to crank I paid $800 for this pile of shit!! Im gonna try to turn the crank tonight but wanna know what I should expect and what its gonna cost PLEASE HELP!!!

Try turning it 'by hand' (usually with a breaker bar on the crank pulley). Make sure it's in park (auto) or neutral (manual) when you do this.

If it turns freely and without obstruction by hand, make sure the noise you're hearing isn't an accessory pulley or belt that was impacted during the collision. You can do this by removing all of the belts. If you're not saving them, do yourself a favor and just cut them off. It's a lot faster.

I've seen some of these vehicles crack the top portion of the intake manifold in a rollover. Might want to ensure there aren't chunks of intake manifold floating around in the valvetrain.

Could also be the flywheel (flex plate if auto).

Either way, be safe about it (disconnect battery when working on it, etc), and good luck!

How long did it sit before you got ahold of it? I picked up a used motor and it sat for a few years. The exhaust valves were stuck open and when i first tried to turn it over (by hand).

Do all the things that McKennar said, but I'd add in removing the spark plugs and looking into the cylinders. If it has sat for awhile and spraying some wd40 in there.
