Sell the '87 IFS for this '85 Solid Axle?

If owner can substantiate all the improvements, it might be worth about that much.
Since its UT, I'm guessing the normal frame rot isn't a concern.

lots to question about that truck, but not for me to throw stones out there.

first issue I see is rear shackle angles are bad, suspension all the way around looks shady. but some things could just be bad pics.

next question is need for body lift

gears and setup , check for drive line vibrations

flex it out and make sure you don't drop a DS out of it's splines.

What are you wanting to do with it ? Why can't you build your 87 to handle what your wanting to do ?

I would keep the 87 and put a good modest lift on it and work on being a technical wheeler than a throttle junkie, if wheeling is what your wanting to do.

Broken Wrench,
Can you explain a little more what you mean about the suspension? I have very little experience with setups like this.

The engine is great and he does have all the receipts for the rebuild. It shifts well and drives around at low speed very well for being so tall. There's plenty of power even with the 35's, though I didn't get a chance to take it on the freeway.

I'm a little torn because I've done so much work to my '87 already. Here's what I've done to date:
Interior:
“New” front seats and seat covers throughout
Painted/Dyed door panels and canopy interior
Fixed horn
LED dome light

Engine:
Plugs/wires/cap/rotor
Hot Shot Starter relay
New Battery
New starter motor contacts
Need to:
Adjust valves, fix at least 2 small oil leaks (oil pan/timing cover), and check timing chain guides.
Need/want headers/new exhaust

Suspension/steering/stopping:

Refurbished wheels w/ used tires
New front rotors/calipers/pads-compete system bleed
Repacked wheel bearings
Greased hubs
New shocks (thank you Kevin!)
New rear leaf springs (thank you again Kevin!) w/ poly bushings & new U-bolts
Kept Zuk mod
New UCA/LCA poly bushings
New poly sway bar bushings
New poly endlinks
New inner/outer tie rods w/ new sleeves
New steering stabilizer
New idler arm
New pitman arm
Ball joint spacers (relaxed torsion rods)
New upper/lower ball joints
New rear driveshaft u-joints

Really want to re-gear to 4.88’s and add a rear Spartan locker.

I think that's it so far.:dizzy:

Uterunner, I like that guy's truck, but in watching his build on RME I think he kinda got excited and started throwing money at it. It's got way too much lift and the lack of transfer case gearing is kinda glaring. It's just really not a comprehensive build - you'd need to remove the body lift, trim the fenders, add longer driveshafts and 4.7 transfer case gears or a doubler (or both) just to get it all working together right. That's another couple thousand or thereabouts, and if you build it much more than that you're going to end up bored with the truck because you can't find a trail hard enough to challenge it.

I think you should stick with the '87. Come hit some trails with us and get to know the truck you've already got. :)

edit - if you have to have a rockcrawler somebody else built, I like this one much better at the same price: http://www.rme4x4.com/showthread.php?98487-Built-86-4Runner-5-29-s-Dual-Cases-37-s-locked. I can't really articulate the difference a dual transfer case or 4.7 tcase gears make when wheeling a manual, it's huge.

Just a quick observation on my end... the runner looks like its in decent shape but my first concern is the rear axle. The axle looks like its sitting pretty far back in the wheel well. I would be willing to bet that when the suspension compresses, the rear wheels will rub big time on the rear of the fenders. The rear axle needs to be moved forward.

Along with what everyone else said above, it's overall not a bad looking rig. And for under 4k I think it's a pretty decent price.
