Selling Something on the Internet

I never sell anything. I usually give stuff away or donate it to charity. With that said I am selling running boards off my new 4Runner.
Question: How do I do the transaction? Sign up for Paypal? Send it and have them send me a check? I am a complete Noob at this so any advice is welcomed.

I always try to deal with local pickup. Hate shipping stuff/taking money online. Usually just a waste of time for the total payout. But I use PayPal when I have to.

Dont mail anything till you have money in hand (real money, not a check). Package things well if shipping, dont give the person something to complain about. Some times things get weird when people buy thing theyve only seen pictures of. "this wasnt dented int he picture, I want all my money back" Kinda thing.

Or when they try and talk you down before they have even seen the item...

all the "yeah ill be there" and no one shows up...

Ugh. Just hate it.

I would avoid PayPal at all costs. I had two credit cards compromised in under a year from tying them to PayPal, with that said maybe you can use PayPal without tying your card to it but I don't think so. So I never sell on eBay, either in person or wait for a check to arrive and then ship the item.
 
You do not need paypal. The only reason to have paypal is if you are selling something through ebay which makes it easier. I would avoid ebay because both ebay and paypal have fees.

If you are selling a large item like the running boards, just post on the T4R.org. Sell locally since this is a large item and shipping will be closely. Both you and buyer benefit from a local sale. This site has a classifieds section. Take a few good pictures. Pictures are good for your advertisement and makes the item sell quicker. State the condition, why you are selling, what vehicle it came off of, etc When selling locally only accept cash.

Very easy to sell things.

I just sold 2 sets of OEM 4runner rims locally off this website. Many people PMed me to ask for shipping costs but I did not want to ship these. Took a few weeks to find a buyer locally but eventually they sold and gave me cash. They met me at my house. Both buyers were 4runner enthusiast and it was a joy talking shop with each buyer.

Also post on craigslist.

I did sell one item long distance on Craigslist, but its not necessarily something I would recommend. Talked with the guy on the phone and sounded legit, so he offered to pay 1/2 upfront on PayPal and send the other half when he received the package. It was only $50 so not the end of the world if he didn't pay the other half, but things worked out well. That being said, I'm fairly certain that was probably in the top 1% of most successful Craigslist transactions in history.

If you sell locally, meet the buyer in a public place, NOT at your house. I've read too many articles about people being robbed or shot that way. I usually include an offer to meet people after work within a 20 mile radius or so which usually works well.
 
Do you already have a buyer for them? If not, I wouldn't personally sell something so big over the internet. Ends up being a pain in the arse.

Edit I didn't see the user name until now. You've really never used PayPal?

I'd suggest CL but always meet in a public place like a Best Buy parking lot and always during the day. Never meet at your house or theirs. No exceptions. Also for using CL the absolute best way to avoid scammers (it really works) is to hide your contact email, including the CL email and tell them to only contact you via your phone. Basically for small transactions like this if they are willing to talk on the phone then 99% chance they are legit.

Craigslist. Keep it local. Too bulky to readily package and ship, unless buyer is willing to pay a substantial packaging and shipping fee.

I did. I probably should have re worded my question here. And no, I never sell things much. I usually give things away or use them til they wear out. Believe it or not I don't buy much new stuff except vehicles lol. I recently gave two bikes away to the Boy Scouts so they could recondition them for their use. They were worn out and I could have sold them I guess, but sometimes its not about the money. I only wanted to sell these new running boards because I figured one of you guys would like to have them.

You can also swing buy a used car retailer and ask them if they'd want a set to put on one of their vehicles that doesn't have one or repair an existing set.

I sold a set of like new tires to a used car shop for 300 bucks.

I sold about 6 cars on Craigslist. Only sold cars and the cars were around the $5k range. Anything higher people try to low ball you or wanna come for a joy ride. I did not even bother posting my 2011 M3 on CL because I know most people on CL shopping for a car <$10k range.

Sold my old iPhone and baby car seat and stroller on there too.

Overall I had good success selling things on CL.
 
OP, for what it's worth, I haven't had much trouble selling on these forums (T4R, TacomaWorld, Z-Cars, etc) with and without PayPal; when I either didn't have PayPal or it was locked up, most folks were willing to send money orders via snail mail to me. Worked out well for all parties.

Sorry. Sold them today for $200 (asking price) and they paid $50 for shipping on top. I registered with PayPal, had a buyer who was patient and let me get it together to sell. One thing: my box making skills suck. I sent the buyer a picture and told him if the boards show up and the box looks like crap don't worry, this is how they left here lol. Anyway, appreciate the advice guys. It was a pleasant experience with a seasoned patient buyer.
